When I saw an old $10 table at Goodwill, I knew I could turn it into something beautiful! See how I turned this table into a  pretty coastal chic side table…you may just be surprised at how easy it was!

You won't believe how easy it was to turn this old $10 table from Goodwill into something absolutely beautiful

When we moved into our new house last year, we knew right away that we wanted a coastal theme.  Why not, we’re Floridians now!  Well, we’re getting there but it’s still a work in progress.  It’s too expensive to do everything at once, especially since we put so much into remodeling it to begin with.  That’s why I was really excited to score this bedside table recently for just $10 at a second hand shop!  I’d never taken on a DIY furniture project in my life but I figured for $10, it wouldn’t be too traumatic if I totally botched it.  We needed a bedside table in our guest room and this was the perfect size so the plan was to fix it up and give it a new coastal look!

Apparently I didn’t check it out very well at the store because I didn’t notice that there was a chunk of wood missing just to the left above the drawer.  I already needed to go to Home Depot for my paint, primer and sanding tools so I added wood filler to the list too.  Of course, I’m not known for going into a store, getting what I came for and leaving…I had to wander a bit to see if there was anything else I needed.  I’m glad I did because otherwise I wouldn’t have discovered these awesome Glade® products.  They had me at Hawaiian Breeze®!

There were a lot to choose from but I finally narrowed it down.  I had to have the Glade® Plugins® Scented Oils because they’re perfect for the guest room.  Hawaiian Breeze® is described as cool ocean winds meeting the scent of tropical fruits, pineapple and plumeria, our guests will definitely feel like they’re on vacation when they come to visit!  All I do is plug it in before they arrive and a continuous fragrance keeps the room feeling tropical and breezy.

I bought the Hawaiian Breeze® Wax Melts to use in the rest of the house.  These wax melts give you the same effect as a scented candle but without the flame…plus they last for 96 hours per pack.  I figured after smelling the paint while working on the table, it would be nice to walk into the house and enjoy the scent of the wax melts.  Finally I grabbed a can of the Glade® Hawaiian Breeze® Room Spray because you just never know when you’ll need to eliminate odors and freshen the air.

Now that I had everything I needed from Home Depot, I was ready to get home and start working on my table.  I was excited to see how this little project would turn out and got started on repairing the damaged section…nothing a little wood filler can’t fix!

Next I sanded the wood filler, then the rest of the table.  Once the table was adequately sanded, I painted it with a primer and then finally it was time to give my table a real coat of paint.

Oops…I wanted a light blue but this was a little too light.  Does anyone else have trouble envisioning what those tiny paint chips will look like on something larger?  I learned my lesson years ago when I was going for a pale pink and ended up with a bright pink that lit up the hallway outside the door.  Now I err on the side of caution but this time I was a little too cautious.  Luckily the table is so small that I can get two coats on with just the sample size so I didn’t mind going back for another color.

This is more like it!

I wanted to give the table a coastal feel with some seashell stencils.  I wasn’t planning on using the mermaid at first but my family decided that the table HAD to have a mermaid…and they were right!  I’ve now hired them on as creative consultants!

Finally, that ugly drawer pull just wasn’t going to do.  What it needed was a pretty shell and I just happened to have found this one at the beach over Memorial Day.  I changed out the pull for a smaller one and glued the shell to the top.  My original plan was to paint it white but hubby said I should leave it as is.  What do you think?  (I can still go back and paint it!).

I’m really happy with how my table turned out…not bad for my first DIY project!

I love the shell as is. It’s such a cool spin on a regular pull.

I’m really impressed with the way you filled the wood. You never would have known. Great job!

I love the mermaid! The table turned out to be an awesome redo.

Leave the shell as is! Looks great!

Where did you get the stencil for the mermaids?

I love what you did with this table! It is so pretty and it would look perfect at our beach house.

Very nice…leave the natural shell as is.

Leave the shell as is. You can put mineral on it and shine it. It enhances the natural colors. Beautiful table. Love the mermaid.

I love it ! You did an awesome job on the table and I would leave the shell as it is, it really gives the table the beachy scene.

Such a great makeover and perfect for Florida! Love the shell as is too! 😉
