When the biggest hurricane in Florida’s history is heading straight towards your house and husband and you are beside yourself with worry, what do you do? We made Hurricane cocktails!
So you may have heard about this little storm called Irma. As much as I love living in Florida, I’ve discovered one big downfall, hurricanes! When Hurricane Irma first started to take shape, I wasn’t concerned. I had a Disney cruise to plan for, leaving on my September 11th birthday.
Apparently, Mother Nature had other plans for us. First our cruise got cancelled. Kudos to Disney for thinking of safety first…they really had no option. Up until Thursday, it still looked like we would be relatively safe and the storm wouldn’t come too close. However, that night it took a turn and Sarasota was smack dab in its sites.
I called my husband and we decided that I needed to hit the road to keep our girls safe. To be honest, I was really scared and was happy to get the heck out of dodge! I frantically packed a few suitcases, grabbed important papers and jewelry and woke up the girls. After getting in the car at midnight, we drove to my husband’s work to kiss him goodbye and started making our way to Atlanta. Seventeen and a half hours, 577 miles and 45 minutes of sleep later, we finally made it!
The next day, my hubby’s work closed early but unfortunately he couldn’t follow us to Atlanta. My mother-in-law wasn’t going to evacuate and he didn’t want to leave her on her own. I begged him to bring her along to Atlanta but he said she wouldn’t do it. Since this was going to be the largest hurricane ever to hit Florida, he stayed behind to make sure she was safe.
So what’s a girl going to do when she’s
worried freaked out about her hubby and house being in the direct path of Hurricane Irma? Drink, of course. While the girls enjoyed a mini-vacation with Grandma and Grandpa, I hung out with my favorite friends and made, what else, hurricanes. I had to alleviate my worry somehow, right? I’d like to say it worked perfectly but I still couldn’t sleep that night. Not knowing what is going to happen is the hardest part of waiting for a hurricane to hit and every possible scenario was playing out in my mind.
Hurricane Cocktails With A Twist
This recipe is a little different from your typical hurricane cocktail. While most call for passion fruit juice, I couldn’t find it anywhere and after a couple stores, I ran out of patience. I just had way too much on my mind and settled for a substitute.
Since cranberry juice makes every drink taste good, I decided to just use it instead. Hence, hurricanes with a twist. We also managed to dig up some drink umbrellas…yay! You’d be surprised at how hard they are to find in Atlanta. I had given up on them too but my friend Kristie had some stashed away.
We drank hurricanes and toasted to my hubby & MIL, my house, and all my friends that stayed behind to brave the storm.
As I write this, I still have no idea what’s going to happen. The eye of the hurricane is scheduled to hit at 2am Monday morning…pretty terrifying. I used to want fancy shoes for my birthday, then it was camera equipment and now I just want my hubby, MIL and house to make it through in one piece! Stay tuned for an update…I’m crossing my fingers that it’s anticlimactic and I spent all that time worrying for nothing!
UPDATE: It was anticlimactic but in a good way! My hubby, MIL and house all made it through without a scratch! Power was out for a short time but it’s already back up and we’re heading home tomorrow!
In the meantime, if you’re looking for more drink recipes, try these out. They’re pretty yummy…
