Moving is a so much fun…said no one ever! Even if you’re super excited about your move, like we were, the actual process is a lot of work! We love our new Florida home and unless my husband’s company opens a location in Australia (#bucketlist), we’re not moving again for a long time.
It didn’t make it any easier that we moved twice in one year! When we first moved to Florida, we chose to rent an apartment until we knew more about the area. Though it was new construction, I still had to do a lot of cleaning to do (new construction = lots of dust and wood shavings).
Fast forward 10 months and it was time to move again, this time into the fixer-upper we’d renovated. Of course, that meant even more cleaning! A cleaning crew did come through at the end but when you’ve ripped out floors, three bathrooms and an entire kitchen, it takes a little extra to get rid of every last speck of dust and dirt that settles in. Plus a lot of our furniture had been in storage…who knew how it would look when we pulled it out. I was going to need lots of cleaning supplies. Not only did I have to make sure the apartment was thoroughly cleaned when we moved out, I had to make sure our house was move-in ready.
Since I’m a list maker, I got to work prioritizing what needed to be done. This gave me direction and also let me know what supplies I’d need. If you’re planning a move anytime soon, feel free to print out my cleaning checklist. I’ve found it definitely helps when I have a list to follow and can check things off as I go (and it always feels so good when you check off that last job)!
Now that I had my go-to list, it was time to buy cleaning supplies. Thank goodness our new house is only five minutes away from Walmart! If you can’t find the cleaning supplies you need there, they probably don’t exist! Plus, we’d already spent way too much money and I felt a little better knowing I’d get great deals at Walmart.
Now that I had everything I needed, it was time to get started! I put my new cleaning supplies to good use!
Okay, this may not qualify as an actual cleaning supply but with a family of four it’s an absolute necessity (and honestly, who hasn’t used a little toilet paper to wipe out all the toothpaste that your kids leave in the sink?). How can you possibly move into a new place without it?! I’m very picky about my toilet paper too…I only like the good stuff! I grabbed the Charmin Ultra Strong 24 Double Roll Bonus Pack because it has a washcloth-like texture that cleans better and also allows you to use up to 4x less than the leading bargain brand. Plus, when I buy the 24 pack I don’t have to buy any more for awhile. That’s important because with three girls in the house, we go through a lot of toilet paper (my hubby is thoroughly perplexed on where it all goes)!
Toilet paper isn’t the only absolute necessity in my house. I couldn’t possibly live without paper towels…I seriously use them for everything. When we moved into our house, I used them to wipe out all the cabinets and drawers, clean counters, wipe random spots off the floor, clean our new refrigerator and about a million other things. Not only that, a lot of our furniture was dusty from spending so long in storage…paper towels and furniture polish easily solved that problem! Finally, I left a roll of paper towels and cleaning spray back at the apartment for any last minute cleaning that needed to be done there.
I’ve been using the Bounty Select-a-Size for years because I usually just need a little bit anyway. The one time my hubby bought the wrong paper towels, it drove me bonkers until we used them up. Another great thing about Bounty is that it’s more absorbent so you can use less and your rolls last longer. Just like with toilet paper, I buy the biggest pack I can find so that I stay stocked up for a long time.
Swiffer Wet Jet
I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love my new Swiffer WetJet Mop! I’d never had tile floors throughout my house before and wasn’t sure what to use to clean them. When I used the Swiffer WetJet Mop for the first time, I knew it was a winner!
It’s so easy to use because it’s an all-in-one mopping system. You simply push a button to spray the WetJet solution, then push the cleaning pad across the floor. The pad traps and locks dirt too so that you’re not just pushing it from one side to the other. You can even choose from two different cleaning pads…one that mops up the everyday dirt and another that comes in handy for tougher spots (a necessity for anyone with a house full of messy kids and leaky sippy cups).
The best part? When you’ve used the cleaning pad a few times, just pull it off, toss it in the trash and attach a new one. It doesn’t get any easier than that! I honestly don’t know how I ever lived without the Swiffer WetJet Mop…it’s pretty awesome!
I don’t know about you but any clothing or linens that have been packed away, even if they’re clean to begin with, have to be rewashed. Do you really want to sleep on sheets that have been stored for months in a cardboard box? Tide PODS are great because they’re a 3-in-1 laundry solution (detergent, stain remover and brightener), they dissolve in any temperature and they can be used in all types of washing machines. When you have a million boxes to unpack, it’s nice to be able to quickly throw in a pod and push start (it’s nice even when you don’t have a million boxes to unpack)!
When you move into a house that’s been completely renovated, you’re going to have all kinds of crazy smells. While the smells eventually go away, it helps to use Unstopables Air Freshener in the meantime. It infuses the air in your home with a crisp scent that lasts for up to 6 hours. Just walk through the house and spray a few bursts in each room to give your house a nice, boutique worthy fragrance. It also works to cover up the musty smell of furniture that’s been in storage for awhile and needs to air out. Just spray your Unstopables Air Freshener all around it for a clean, fresh scent instead.

Moving is a lot of work but I’m so glad that I had all these cleaning supplies to help me make it through. Now, unless we hear something about a surprise transfer to Australia, we’re staying put for a very long time!
