I write a lot about the things we miss from our pre-parenthood days, lies we tell our children just to keep the day running smoothly and how to control 3 year old tantrums. However, while we all know that parenting can be a challenge, there are definitely some fringe benefits as well! By that I mean that there are some awesome things you get away with when you have kids that would otherwise have people looking at you a little funny!
1. Buying the toys you were deprived of in your own childhood
My parents bought me plenty of toys as a child but I never got that coveted Easy Bake Oven. If there’s such a thing as Easy Bake Oven Envy, that’s what I experienced any time I discovered that one of my friends had one. Of course, as an adult, my friends would have worried if they came over and I was cooking in an oven that’s heated by a light bulb…they may have even taken my wine away! However, I finally bought one for my daughter when she was old enough and we did exactly what I would have done as a kid. We played with it every day for about a week, then put it in a cabinet, never to be seen again.
2. Decorating your kid’s rooms as elaborately as you want
I’m pretty sure that my husband would have something to say about it if I turned our bedroom into a giant ice castle or stuck giant princesses all over the walls! Luckily I have two little girls who are more than willing to let mommy go nuts decorating their rooms! I’m not sure how that will work out for me once they become teenagers but I’m enjoying it while I can.
3. Singing Disney songs in the car (the louder the better)
The minute we get in the car, my daughters request Disney songs. Our favorites change weekly and Tangled is the big one right now (though Hakuna Matata is always a hit). As we belt out “Mother Knows Best” or “I Have A Dream”, we get louder and louder as we go. As dorky as it sounds, nothing brings me joy like singing at the top of my lungs with our girls, each of us trying to outdo the other! It might look a little funny if someone pulled up next to me at a stoplight and I was singing yelling Hakuna Matata all alone in my car. Somehow having kids in the backseat makes it all okay.
4. Meeting all the Disney characters because “the kids” want to
We bought annual passes to Disney as soon as we moved to Florida and try to go every chance that we get. If you’ve ever been, you know that one of the main attractions is meeting all the characters. I have to admit, I really do love meeting the princesses (though Gaston was pretty hilarious too). However, I would never stand in line to meet them if it was just me. I’ve seen plenty of other adults do it but I guess I would just feel a little weird. Having the girls with me just gives me an excuse to do something I want to anyway!
5. Going to all the animated movies you want
Before I had kids, I felt a little silly going to animated movies by myself. Nobody else ever wanted to see the latest rated G hit so I was usually on my own. I got over it and went anyway but it’s still much more fun when you have little ones to bring with you. Plus, I don’t look like a complete pig ordering the giant popcorn when I have my girls with me (even though I still eat most of it myself)!
6. Having the BEST dance parties
Most nights after dinner, our neighbors could probably look through our window and see a crazy dance party. We listen to music during dinner and sometimes it’s all I can do to keep our three year old in her chair until she’s finished eating. All she’s thinking about is getting the party started! Sometimes it’s just the girls performing but other times it’s a family affair and even daddy joins in. It’s always SO much fun but I’d like to see the look on my husband’s face (before kids) if I got up after dinner and made him dance wildly around the living room with me. This is another instance where my wine might be taken away.
7. Baking cookies…just because
I never would have just randomly baked cookies before I had kids. I know other people do but that’s not me. Even if I did bake them for some school function, it was always from the pre-made roll of cookie dough. Once you have kids though, baking together is really fun and you don’t even need a good reason! I don’t even mind that the kitchen is completely covered in flour when we’re done (okay, maybe just a little).
8. Climbing trees again
I might be a girly girl but I LOVED climbing trees when I was little! However, unless there’s a giant bear chasing me, I’d look pretty funny climbing a tree as an adult. I finally got to climb a tree again when we were teaching my daughter how to do it. I had completely forgotten just how much fun it is! I promise that it’s okay to climb up a tree if you’re helping your kid…just make sure you can get back down on your own!
9. Building sand castles
You also rediscover how much fun it is to build sand castles. Don’t get me wrong…most of the time I’d rather just sit in my chair and relax but my girls only let me get away with that for so long. My services are eventually needed to help them either jump in the waves or to build sand castles. I reluctantly get up but once I get started on a sand castle, I can get pretty serious about it. Don’t even get daddy started…he REALLY means business when I comes to building a sand castle. In his mind, his castles all look like the one at the top of this page!
Basically what I’m saying is that when you have kids, you have a great excuse to act silly! Of course, this all starts the day they’re born. It begins with the baby talk and then you’re making every silly face in the book just to get that baby to smile. It only gets
worse better from there. Before you know it, you’re singing Disney songs in the car and dancing around the living room like a crazy person (but I promise not to take away your wine)!
