From celebrating Every Kid Healthy Week to grants for schools, find out why GoGo squeeZ has teamed up with Action for Healthy Kids to help make families happier and healthier.
When I attended the Disney Social Media Mom’s Celebration in February, one of the highlights for me was meeting Olympic Champion Dominique Dawes in person. As a mom, she knows the importance of keeping kids healthy and active, which is why she’s partnered with GoGo squeeZ to help make that happen. Though I might not be able to identify with her as an Olympic gymnast (sadly, I never learned to do so much as a cartwheel) I totally identified with her as a mom. We both have two little girls and no matter how different our lives may seem, all we really want is to raise happy and healthy kids.
It’s not always easy! My youngest daughter would be perfectly happy watching cartoons or YouTube videos all day while my oldest could spend hours on end writing stories on her computer. While I appreciate her creativity (the YouTube videos are another story), I also know that too much screen time is an easy habit to fall into. That’s why I try to make a point of spending outdoor time whenever we can.
Because we’re lucky to have a pool (one of my requirements for moving to Florida), it’s usually not hard to convince my girls to go outside and play. And I always try to have healthy snacks on hand to teach them about the other piece of the lifestyle puzzle – good nutrition.
Even without a pool, there are plenty of ways for kids to stay active. My girls used to be just as happy when I’d set up a sprinkler in the yard and let them run through it until they were completely drenched and exhausted. They also love riding their scooters and bikes and are always up for an afternoon at the park.
However, as a former teacher I know that not all children get physical activity or nutrition education on a regular basis. I love that Action For Healthy Kids has stepped in to help! This amazing non-profit has been working hard to bring nutrition and physical activity programs to more than 29,000 schools. As someone who watched our Kindergarten recess get shorter year after year, I’m so glad physical activity and education is finally being recognized as an important part of a student’s day. They’re also teaching millions of students and parents how incorporate healthy eating habits into their life.
Every Kid Healthy Week
To recognize the progress schools have made in moving towards healthier environments, Action For Healthy Kids is celebrating their 5th annual Every Kid Healthy Week. Taking place from April 24-28, schools participate by hosting fun physical activities and nutrition themed events. These include everything from fruit tasting, push-up challenges, planting gardens, family fitness nights and more.
Because GoGo squeeZ also wants to help make families happier and healthier, it seems like a perfect fit that they’ve teamed up with Action for Healthy Kids. GoGo squeeZ has made a long term commitment to this cause as well. They will provide $750,000 in grant funding over three years to schools across the country. A portion of this is going to 250 schools right now for Every Kid Healthy Week. This contribution will go a long way towards helping to improve school foods, educate students and parents alike about proper nutrition and provide physical education for all students.
Something like this can’t help but have an impact on student health and academic performance. Think about it. Don’t you always feel better when you eat healthy and get more exercise? It’s the same for kids, maybe even more so. This program helps them learn the importance of learning good lifelong habits. They should know that while it’s okay to reach for a cookie now and then, an apple is a much better choice. I’m still trying to get my five year old to understand but we’re getting there!
It really does take a village to raise happy, healthy kids. Learn more about how you can get involved. Just head over to the GoGo squeeZ page for plenty of great ideas!
