Go from drab to fab with these easy & inexpensive makeovers for any room

Most of us have a room in our house that we’d like to make over but just don’t feel like we have the extra time or money.   Re-doing an entire room can get pretty expensive, or so we think.  Sure, if you want all new furniture, window treatments and more, it will probably cost a pretty penny.  However, you don’t have to do all those things to transform the room from drab to fab.  Just try these easy and inexpensive alternatives to give that room a whole new look!

[bctt tweet=”Turn that room from drab to fab with these easy & inexpensive makeover ideas for any room.”]

Fresh Paint:

A new color scheme can make all the difference in the world and if you do it yourself, it doesn’t have to cost all that much.  Paint the entire room or just select one wall as an accent wall.

Re-arrange The Furniture:

This is completely free and you can change the entire look of a room just by moving things around.  You can make a small room look larger or a large room look more cozy.  You can always check out Pinterest or watch home renovation shows on TV to find inspiration.

New Linens, Slipcovers, etc:

If you’re making over a bedroom, new bedding can make a world of difference.  Don’t like the bathroom?  Change out the shower curtain and add some matching towels.  If it’s the living room that you’re unhappy with, get a slipcover for the sofa.  This is not only good for a new look but you’ll also hide all those spills that the kids left behind!

Use Decorative Pillows:

This goes hand in hand with new bedding and slipcovers.  Buy some pretty decorative pillows and place them on the bed or on furniture around the room.  Even better, if you can sew, make them yourself and save a few more dollars!

Change Out Or Add New Artwork:

You can easily transform the theme of a room just by changing or adding to the artwork.  This is one of my favorites because I love getting new art!   When we moved to Florida last year, we knew that we wanted a modern coastal theme.  We’ve been in our house about eight months now and pretty much have it just like we want it, with one exception.  We want to do something nice with the guest room but just haven’t gotten around to it yet.  I’ve added a few touches here and there but there’s so much more that I want to do before I’ll feel like it’s “finished”.

However, I recently checked out Gallery Direct to find some art that might give the room a more “beachy” feel!  The site is really easy to navigate because the artwork is already divided by subject.  It also doesn’t hurt that they have free shipping!  I went straight to the coastal & tropical category and found some great pieces to choose from:

Boats Abound

Distinct Microstructure

Three Palms

Then I found the Time Off collection!  How can you not love these pieces?!  They were by far my favorites!

Time Off III

Time Off V

Time Off VII

Time Off XII

I had hubby take a look and we narrowed it down to two.  We already knew we wanted something with palm trees so we went with the “Time Off XII” piece.  We also loved the retro look of “Time Off III”, especially since the Coppertone girl reminds us a lot of our three year old!  Our new art looks fantastic and now our guest room is that much closer to being completed.

all of them!!! the most needed is the kitchen, a little artwork to cheer it up would go a long way esp until I can paint, etc.

I TOTALLY know what you mean! I tried to pick out a pale pink for my daughter’s old room and it was so bright that the hallway would look pink on sunny days!!! They never look the same as on the swatch!

Perfect timing… my husband leaves for a business trip in a few weeks and it seems like I always re-do a room when he’s gone. I was thinking paint for the 1/2 bath and replacing our old cabinet with a few open shelves and baskets. I hand’t thought about artwork but I think I might paint something up myself!

Hi Lisa! I totally agree! Updating with paint is a fantastic way to makeover a room or your home. I don’t even think you need to do the walls necessarily. Sometimes just refreshing the trim around the doors is enough to brighten up a room. I even will take some paint (that matches our walls) and touch up scuff marks and that helps too. We repainted our bathroom this year and even though it took some time (considering our first color was a disaster), I absolutely love our bathroom. It feels so bright and new. I also love the Bounts Abound print!

You are absolutely right! When we were getting our old house ready to sell, I went around and touched up all the marks on the wall and it look great! Then I wondered why I didn’t do it sooner so I could enjoy it while I was living there! Great tips!

All of my rooms need a makeover! I especially need some artwork in our bedroom. I don’t like to have pictures of my family in our room because I don’t want to think of real life when I’m going to bed. I much prefer artwork.

Our extra room needs a makeover. It’s a multipurpose room, the kids play in it, my craft area is set up, we have bookshelves and a bay window with a bench. It’s pretty boring and the walls are bare. πŸ™

They do say that houses sell faster with neutral paint colors so hopefully yours will sell quickly and you can go paint your new place with beautiful colors! Good luck!
