These things sure did annoy me before I became a parent but it all changed once that little bundle of joy arrived!
Before I became a parent, I was a completely different person! I wore heels regularly, washed my hair every other day and drank wine because I was socializing with my friends, not because we had hit that horrible time of day when it was too late for a nap but too early for bedtime and I needed the wine to help keep my sanity!
While I was much more “put-together” back then, there were also a lot more things that bothered me. Motherhood can definitely be stressful but it has also made me more capable of just letting some things go. These are just 5 of the things that stopped annoying me once I became a parent…
Screaming babies on planes
Before you have kids, you see that mom walking onto the plan with her baby and say a silent prayer that her seat number doesn’t match that empty seat next to you! Of course, then she sits next to you and you’re wondering where they keep the parachutes! Once you become a mom, all you feel is pity for that poor mother with the screaming baby (and secretly elated that it’s not you)!
I used to think those moms that dragged their screaming kids through the aisles were horrible and cruel. Now I’ve come to realize that unless you want to spend the entire day stuck in the Target toy department, you do what you have to do. Luckily mine are past that stage but I do remember a particularly miserable day when my daughter threw such a tantrum that it lasted all the way to the parking lot and I could barely get her strapped in her carseat. The screams were so loud that I was seriously concerned that passers-by would think I was kidnapping her.
I was never one of those people who could think up a quick on-the-spot excuse to get out of something. My punishment was that I got stuck going to a few Chuck-e-Cheese parties when I didn’t even have kids yet! If your friends have done this to you, you may need to reconsider the friendship! However, now that I have kids of my own, I actually don’t mind the place. I’ve even, gasp, found myself having fun there! Plus, they serve beer!
A Messy Car
The old version of me drove a fancy car and couldn’t stand for it to have any kind of clutter. I even belonged to one of those fancy car washes where you paid a monthly fee and they would clean your car as often as you liked! If you were to peek in the back of my car right now, it would look something like a cross between Toys-R-Us and a landfill with nothing but discarded goldfish, raisins and empty apple juice boxes (with maybe a few random French fries thrown in)! Whatever you do, DO NOT look under the car seat! Believe it or not, I actually do clean my car on occasion but with two kids to immediately destroy it again, no one would ever know! Yet another thing I’ve decided not to stress over anymore.
Spills On The Furniture
It used to drive me absolutely crazy when anything, even water, was spilled on the sofa. Eight years into parenthood, our sofa has been covered with milk, juice, random sticky foods and other things way too disgusting to mention. Now when I see the sippy cup upside down on the sofa, leaking milk all over the place, I don’t even flinch! We can get new furniture when they go off to college!
Is this you? What are some of the things that you’ve given up stressing over?
