When I started my blog on a whim three years ago, I never would have predicted how much of an impact it would make on my life. Find out how three years of blogging has changed me!
It’s hard to believe that three years ago, I was sitting at my computer having a glass (or two) of wine and decided out of the blue that I was going to start a blog. The thought had never even crossed my mind. In fact, when I taught Kindergarten, they made us keep a class blog and I hated it. It was just one more deadline to stress over each week.
However, now I had more free time on my hands. We’d moved to Florida and my hubby had agreed to let me take two years off to be a stay at home mom. I wasn’t used to having so much extra time on my hands though and was quickly running out of Netflix shows to binge watch! It looked like I needed a hobby and so that fateful night on my computer, I literally googled how to start a blog and officially became…a blogger!
I had no idea how much that one decision would change my life. Three years later, blogging is not just a hobby, it’s my career. Crazy, right? My two year teaching hiatus is looking pretty permanent these days. (Side note: You would not believe how many bloggers are former teachers!). The last three years have been crazy fun as I tried to figure out what in the heck I was doing and slowly started turning this blog into something bigger. I learned a lot about blogging and about myself…
It’s Given Me Confidence
I feel like I can do anything now. Okay, maybe not anything. I’ll never be a mathematician and if you ask my husband, I’ll never learn how to turn off the lights around the house. That being said, blogging has given me a tremendous amount of confidence in myself. Three years ago, I never would have imagined myself running my own business, much less one that was relatively successful!
The fact that major brands want to work with me on a regular basis, more people are visiting my blog every day and I’m actually making money at this makes me feel like I must be doing something right. There were times early on where I had a lot of self doubt but the longer I do this, the more confident I become.
I’m More Determined Than Ever
This path hasn’t always been easy. I remember filling a basket with holiday photo props because they were heavily discounted after the holiday. After a lot of thought, I put them back because I questioned if I’d still be blogging when the holiday came back around the following year. I just couldn’t give up though. I really wanted to make this work and decided that I’d do whatever I had to. Thank goodness I’m so
stubborn determined or I never would have made it this far…and this is just the beginning!
I Have More Family Time
This may just be the biggest benefit for me! When I taught full time, I was gone before my girls woke up and didn’t get home until late each day. I missed going to the bus stop on the first day of school, chaperoning field trips and volunteering in the classroom. Since my husband worked weekends and holidays, we only had Monday and Tuesday nights together.
Now I make my own hours and have so much more quality time with my family! I saw my girls off for the first day of school, volunteer in their classrooms and spend time with my hubby on a regular basis! My flexible hours give me the freedom to be there for them, the biggest fringe benefit of my new career.
I’m Loving The Perks
I can’t lie…the perks of blogging are pretty amazing. When I needed a new coffee maker, I emailed the company that makes the one I wanted and they sent it to me. The coffee maker is awesome and the bonus is that now I can make coffee drinks for the blog too.
My favorite perks involve travel though. I was in heaven last year when Disney invited me and my family for a three day press trip! We’ve since been invited back and my heart skips a beat anytime an e-mail from Disney comes in. Writing for TravelingMom.com brings even more travel perks, including an upcoming Disney Cruise with my family!
As if those perks aren’t enough, I’ve been appearing from time to time on our local talk show, Sarasota’s Suncoast View. It’s a lot of fun and another one of those things that I never dreamed I’d be doing.
I Appreciate My Husband More Than Ever
Okay, I already knew that he was pretty awesome but the last three years have just cemented that fact. I knew early on, even when I wasn’t making much money, that this was something that I wanted to pursue. However, we’d always been used to two incomes. I knew he was counting down until I started bringing home the bacon again.
However, when it came down to it, he supported my decision to continue down this path and has believed in me every step of the way. I definitely couldn’t have done this without him…I think he’s a keeper!
I’m still pinching myself that I’ve lucked into something that I love so much. It’s been an amazing three years and I can’t wait to see what the next three bring!
