Ingredients

4th Of July Rice Krispie Treats Ingredients
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Rice Krispies
  • White frosting
  • Unsalted butter
  • Blue gel food coloring
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Patriotic sprinkles

How To Make 4th of July Rice Krispie Treats

Making The Treats

Step 1: Spray two 9×13 pans with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.

Step 2: Place half the butter (sliced into small pieces) and half the marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl. Place the other half of the marshmallows and butter in a second bowl. (Be sure to use fresh marshmallows. Ones that have been sitting in the pantry awhile may not melt as well.)

Step 3: One at a time, place the bowls in the microwave and cook for 1.5 minutes on high, stopping to stir every 20 seconds. Marshmallows should be free of lumps with the butter completely melted.

Note: you can also use a large saucepan on low heat for this step. Just melt the butter first, then stir in the marshmallows. Continue to stir until completely melted.

Step 4: Add the red food coloring to one bowl and the blue food coloring to the other. Mix each bowl until there are no color streaks remaining.

Step 5: Add half the Rice Krispies to one bowl and the other half to the other bowl.
Fold cereal gently into each bowl until it’s fully coated in the melted marshmallow mixture.

Step 6: Pour the red cereal mixture into one prepared pan and the blue mixture into the other. Gently press each one into an even layer covering the entire pan, making sure not to pack them down too hard.

Note: Spray cooking spray on your hands before your start. This way the cereal doesn’t stick to your hands as much.

Step 7: Cover the top of each layer with patriotic sprinkles, then let both pans sit for about 30 minutes or until fully set.

Making The Star Sandwiches

Step 8: Once set, use your cookie cutter to cut out as many stars as you can from both the blue and red Rice Krispie treats. Sometimes I’ll use a small circle cookie cutter to make little circles from the leftover pieces to make fun little bite size snacks too!

Step 9: Place the frosting in a piping bag with tip (I used the Ateco 864 tip). Add frosting to the “un-sprinkled” side of half the stars. You don’t need to go all the way up the skinny portion of the star’s tips.

Step 10: Place the unfrosted stars on top of the frosted ones, with the sprinkle sides facing away from the frosting. Serve and enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

  • When placing the two halves together, don’t press the treats together too hard or the frosting will come gushing out the sides.
  • Make sure to use a metal or other strong cookie cutter. Plastic isn’t strong enough for the job, and you’ll have trouble when you try to cut the treats.
  • Don’t worry if the Rice Krispie treats seem thin going into the pan. Once you add the frosting and the other halves, they’ll be the perfect size.
  • You’re welcome to use other frosting or sprinkle options for this fun patriotic treat. You can also use the same color for the top and bottom halves and color the frosting to go with it (for example, red treats with blue frosting in the middle).

How Do I Store Fourth of July Rice Krispie Treats?

Store your leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature. It’s a good idea to place a piece of parchment paper or wax paper in between layers to keep them from sticking together, or you can wrap each treat individually in plastic wrap. They should stay fresh for about 3-4 days.

What if I Don’t Have a Piping Bag and Frosting Tip?

No problem! You can substitute a sturdy plastic bag. Cut a small corner off the bag and pipe the frosting through the hole. Just make sure you don’t cut the hole too big, or it will be difficult to frost the treats neatly.

    10 Cups Rice Krispies
  • Fold cereal gently into each bowl until it’s fully coated in the melted marshmallow mixture.

Notes

  • Instead of microwaving, you can also use a large saucepan on low heat to melt the marshmallows with the butter. Just melt the butter first, then stir in the marshmallows. Continue to stir until completely melted. I typically do it this way unless I’m making multiple colors.
  • Spray cooking spray on your hands to help keep the cereal from sticking to them as you spread them in the pan.

This is great.A colourful treat for Fourth of July!Seems it is easy to prepare!

WOW – these look so good. I’ll be making these, but not just for the fourth 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

I have a weakness for these kind of treats too! It’s such a great idea to add candy melts.

These are adorable. My daughter and hubby would love them. I’m not personally a fan of marshmallows. Haha. I’d make them for the cute factor though. ?

These are so cute and festive! I love it!
