Have you ever said yes to something that completely changed your life? I changed my life with one simple yes and it was the best decision I’ve ever made!
Three and a half years ago, I said yes to something that completely changed my life. Things were different back then. We lived in Atlanta and life had had become all work and no play. I am not a morning person (just ask my family), yet I was getting up at 4:45 every morning to drive almost an hour across town where I worked as a Kindergarten teacher. My family was asleep when I left and by the time I got home. there just enough time for dinner, homework and all the other typical mom stuff. When I finally put the girls to bed, instead of Netflix and chill, I had lesson plans and progress reports to take care of.
That didn’t give me much quality time with the kids but I had even less time with my husband. His commute was an hour each way, and that was when traffic was good. He worked a lot at night and we didn’t have the same days off so we rarely had more than a few hours at a time together. I missed him!
I was stressed, exhausted and desperately wanted more time with my family. The icing on the cake was the infamous Atlanta ice storm of 2014. Our regular winter weather was enough to make me want to hibernate until spring but this one was particularly bad. Don’t believe it gets cold in Atlanta? This was our backyard during a different snowstorm that same year.
When the ice storm hit, I was one of countless others who got gridlocked and had to abandon their car. I was luckier than most though because I’d made it to within a mile of my friend’s house. My face was bright red from the cold and I was covered in snow but Kristie had wine so that made it all better!
Side note: When we evacuated for Hurricane Irma a couple weeks ago, we headed straight for Kristie’s house again. Her house seems to have become my shelter from all natural disasters and once again, she had wine! That’s a good friend!
How One Simple Yes Changed My Life
Fast forward a few months when my hubby came home and told me there was a job opportunity in Sarasota. He wanted to know if I thought he should put in for a transfer. It didn’t matter to me that I’d never even been to Sarasota. It’s a popular vacation spot so it must be nice, right? Plus, I’d never get stuck in the snow again! I immediately said yes! I waited on pins and needles until we got word but can probably guess what happened. The O’Driscoll family was headed south.
Moving to Sarasota was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made! First of all, winter lasts about two weeks here…it’s glorious! Almost as soon as I pull out those winter boots, it’s time to put them back in storage again. Last year we even swam in our pool on Christmas day! In fact, we’re in the pool almost every day.
Even better, I’ve found a new career that I absolutely love. Since I’d decided to take a two year hiatus from teaching, I needed something to keep me busy and started this blog on a whim. Who knew that it would grow into a successful business that included TV appearances and regular trips to Disney?!
While those are great, the real bonus is that I have all the time I want with my family now. I’m able to get my girls ready for school every morning and I’m there when they get off the bus each afternoon. Not only that, I can actually spend time with my hubby on his days off. If you would have told me 3 1/2 years ago that this would be my life, I never would have believed it. Even little Keira seems to be loving the Florida lifestyle!
