Spring break is coming up and you know that that means…time for a new swimsuit. I don’t care what size you are or how much you like shopping, swimsuit shopping can be tricky to say the least. Yes, there may be 5% of women that take one look in the dressing room mirror and thinks “Wow, I look super hot and fabulous in this miniscule bikini” but even 5% may be an overestimation. I’m not here to start a debate over how we should all accept our bodies. Of course we know that’s true but let’s face it, it’s easier said than done…we are women, after all. Years ago, when I literally weighed all of 100 pounds (and long before I had two kids), I threw away more than half of our beach vacation photos because I thought my thighs looked so gargantuan! (If only I could still be that “gargantuan”). Crazy I know, but it’s a girl thing.
So, now you’re shopping for new swimsuit. I could tell you about all the different swimsuits you could buy to compliment your body type but that’s easy enough to google. No, I’m going to give you my own personal tips that I’ve picked up over the years. Some of them may sound a little silly but don’t worry about it. As long as you walk out of that dressing room feeling like Kate Upton’s got nothing on you, a little silliness is a good thing.
Get A Tan
Let’s face it, with the exception of Nicole Kidman, most of us look better with a golden tan. Unfortunately, baking in the sun all day is unhealthy (and even worse, it ages us faster and NOBODY wants that ). However, you do have options. If you don’t mind spending the extra money, head over to that fancy tanning salon for a spray tan. If you’re more budget conscious, pop into the nearest store and pick up some self tanning lotion. Don’t be scared. If you haven’t used it since the days when it left your skin orange and streaky (I once looked like the creature from the orange lagoon), I can assure you that tanning lotions have evolved since then.
We all know that wearing heels makes our legs look longer and leaner. Why not plan ahead and wear heels when you go swimsuit shopping so that you’ll look your best in that dressing room mirror. Now, I’m not talking about 5″ Louboutins (although there’s no doubt that you would look amazing in them) but just a small heel or some wedges that will give you a little boost. Yes, I know that you won’t be wearing those heels on the beach, but then again, you won’t have a mirror on the beach either.
Sport A Thong
The last thing you want to see when you’re trying on that swimsuit are panties sticking out the sides, no matter how pretty and lacy they are. I don’t know about you but it’s distracting to me and I don’t feel like I can get the full look of the swimsuit. Yes, you can try to tuck them underneath but then they just look bulgy and we’re trying our best to hide the bulges, not create more. If you just wear a thong to start, you won’t even have to worry about it. Bonus…if your husband knows you’re wearing a thong, he probably won’t even care how much that swimsuit costs. Have you seen how much a good swimsuit costs these days? Sorry, I digress…
Enjoy A Nice Salad
Shopping and a nice, relaxing lunch go hand in hand. However, don’t eat so much that if you were famous, paparazzi would be chasing you down the street asking about your due date. You’ll feel much better in that swimsuit if you just eat a small salad for lunch and save the cheeseburger for later.
Have A Glass Of Wine
When you find a good restaurant for lunch, don’t forget to order a nice glass of wine with your salad (see above). It will relax you and you won’t be so critical when looking at your reflection in the dressing room mirror. We already know this works with men…haven’t you ever heard of beer goggles? (Don’t have beer though because then you’ll just feel bloated). Sit back, enjoy that salad and glass of wine (or two) and now you’re ready to go look amazing trying on all those bikinis.
Hopefully these tips will help you feel amazing when you’re shopping for that perfect swimsuit. If you decide to try the last couple, please invite me along. I’m always up for a fun day of shopping and some wine!!!
