What on earth did people do before the internet? I can’t imagine a life without being able to shop online! How did you buy Christmas or birthday gifts for your kids when they are always right by your side? Maybe your old friend that lives three states away just had a baby and you wanted to send a gift. However, you really don’t want to make the trek to the mall, then to the seamstress for personalization and then finally to the post office to mail it off. What if it’s just a random Thursday night at 10pm and your having a glass of wine when the shoe shopping urge hits you? To bad…you were out of luck! And they called that the “Good Old Days”? I guess it’s good in the sense tha maybe you didn’t spend as much money but I sure do love having the option.
The great thing about shopping online is that there are often more ways to save money than if you went to the mall! You can’t stand inside a department store and comparison shop with dozens of other stores to be sure you’re getting the best price. Well, of course there’s an app for that but it’s not nearly as easy as doing it all in the comfort of your own home. Don’t get me wrong, I love going to the mall and to the cute little shops and boutiques around town. I do it for the experience and it makes for a fun day! However, you can’t beat the convenience of clicking a few buttons and having something fabulous show up at your door within a matter of days.
That being said, I’ve discovered a few ways that you can save money when shopping online. Maybe you’ve discovered some of these as well but hopefully you’ll pick up a few new tips along the way…

*ALWAYS search for a promo code or coupon first…
There are some great sites for doing this, RetailMeNot.com and DealsPlus.com being just a couple. All you really have to do is google and if there’s a promo code, it will come up. Even if I’m SURE that I won’t find a coupon or promo code for what I’m buying, I still look anyway. There have been times when I’ve been pleasantly surprised…you just never know. You certainly won’t find promo codes for everything but isn’t it worth a couple extra minutes to possibly save a few bucks?
*Don’t buy without comparison shopping first…
I know there are a lot of apps for this but personally I just use google (I promise google is not paying me for this post!). If I’m looking for a particular pair of shoes, I google them and can instantly see what they’re selling for at various stores, Amazon and even on ebay. You may already have the best price but it’s always a good idea to take an extra look. Maybe one of the other retailers that carries the shoes you want has a promo code that you can use (see above).
*Subscribe to newsletters…
In order to get the most up-to-date info for my blog, I’ve subscribed to a lot of newsletters from different retailers. I guarantee you don’t want as many as I get because my inbox fills up VERY quickly each morning and sometimes my brain hurts just looking at it! However, one thing I’ve noticed is that as a reward for subscribing to their newsletter, the majority of retailers will send you a coupon code good for a percentage off your next purchase. It usually ranges from 10% to 25% but occasionally it can be even more. If there’s something you want to order from a particular store, subscribe to the newsletter first. Usually you’ll get the promo code within the next 24 hours.
*Like the retailer on Facebook
Sometimes retailers offer special promotions via their Facebook page. You can also be one of the first to find out about special sales and events that you might not have heard about otherwise. It’s worth checking out!
*Combine your purchases to save on shipping
Many retailers offer “free shipping” when you go above a certain dollar amount. If you are close but not quite there yet, be sure you have everything you need. Are you purchasing a birthday gift but just a few dollar short? Maybe that toy needs some batteries. Buying a new dress for a party? I bought some clearance earrings in the past just because I was a couple dollars below the free shipping threshold. I got my free shipping and a cute pair of earrings too! However, I don’t advise ordering something that you don’t need just get the free shipping…that kind of defeats the purpose.
*Only buy makeup during “Free Gift With Purchase” promotions
I love Estee Lauder and use a lot of their products. However, I only shop for make-up when I can receive a free gift with my purchase. The products I use are frequently part of these giveaways…that’s actually how I started using many of them in the first place. My favorite lipstick color is often included and I probably have at least a three year supply saved up. If there’s ever some catastrophic, earth-shattering event, I can at least take comfort in the fact that I won’t run out of lipstick!!! I’m usually able to get my moisturizer, skin cleanser and mascara in these “free” gifts too. These offers come along so often that you can pick and choose, only selecting the free gifts that contain items you will actually use. Make a mental note when you’re running low on something and then keep an eye on the promotions that pop up. I suggest keeping a list of about 6-8 department stores saved in your favorites in order to search more efficiently.
*Sign up for free shipping trials
You’ve probably heard of (or even use) Amazon Prime. They offer a 30 day free trial so if you know you’re going to be making a lot of purchases, it’s worth signing up. Shop Runner is another great site! I signed up for their 30 day free trial and at the end of my 30 days, they gave me a year for free! I don’t know if they’re still making that offer (it was almost a year ago) but it’s worth getting the initial 30 days at least. It only applies to stores on their list but that list includes Toys R Us/Babies R Us, Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor, The Limited, Tommy Hilfiger, Nine West and many more.
Shopping online is fun but it’s even more fun when you are able to find discounts at the same time! Hopefully you can use some of these tips next time you want to score a great deal on a fabulous pair of shoes!
