There’s always something new to discover when you live in Florida. Recently, I found out that tervis, makers of everybody’s favorite tumbler, had their headquarters not far from where I live. When I was asked if I wanted to tour their factory, I jumped at the chance. I’ve always loved the show How It’s Made and thought it would be fun to see what goes into making a tervis tumbler. This isn’t a sponsored post, I just really like tervis products and wanted to see the factory!
After a few photos, we went inside to check it out. The factory was huge!
I was surprised to learn that tervis has been around since 1946, when two engineers, Frank Cotter and G. Howlett Davis, designed a sealed, double wall tumbler to keep their hot drinks hot and their cold drinks cold. They realized they were on to something and took the last three letters from each of their names to form tervis.
The company has grown a little since 1946! Now they make more than just tumblers. You can find sippy cups, water bottles and my personal favorite, wine glasses.
While I was there, I even got to make my own tumbler. While tervis has thousands of designs to choose from, you know I had to go for the Disney Princess design! I inserted the sheet of plastic with the images into the larger cup, then added a smaller cup inside. Then it was time to put it in the magical machine that permanently seals it.
You can never have too much Disney in your life and I love my new tumbler.
While the general public can’t tour the factory, they can visit the tervis store in Osprey, Florida. This is the best time to go because they’re celebrating their grand reopening on Saturday, October 14th. I even got to take a little sneak peek!
The folks at tervis have added a fun party room where you can host birthday parties, Girl’s Night Out or anything else you’d like to plan. On one wall, you can learn about the history of tervis and see some of the tumblers they’ve produced over the years. Fun fact: They once made a tumbler that consisted of glitter, confetti and other stuff they had laying around…it was their most popular tumbler for years.
The best part about this new area is that you can make your own tumbler. For just $5 more than what you’d normally pay, you can personalize one exactly how you want it. You can even make one as a gift for somebody else. First you choose the basic design (or you can start completely from scratch). Of course, this girly girl had to have the one with the flowers.
Next I used permanent markers to add my own special touch. I thought my garden needed some bumblebees and butterflies. Here’s my design before I put it all together.
Next it was time to actually make the tumbler. I started by inserting the plastic piece into the larger cup, then placing a smaller cup inside that. Then it was on to the machine that makes the tervis magic happen.
I love my new tumbler, though I think my girls may steal this one from me too!
Afterwards I got the chance to walk around the store. They have everything here you could imagine, even a tumbler with my favorite NFL team!
This one is perfect for when I’m chilling by the pool!
Then I hit the motherload…the Harry Potter tervis tumblers! I didn’t even know tervis made these but my nine year old daughter would be going crazy if she’d been with me. She’s obsessed with all things Harry Potter, she’s even got the costume for Halloween this year, and I knew she’d absolutely love these! Hmm…she does have a birthday coming up in a few weeks.
If you haven’t checked out the new stainless steel tumblers, they’re pretty cool too.
If you’re in the Venice area, swing by the store and enjoy your own tervis experience. Make a cup of your own or just check out all the cool ones they’ve already made for you. If you’re not in the area, you can always check to see if there’s a location near you. It’s a fun place to wander through!
