Food for a hurricane food kit

Hurricanes are pretty much a way of life when you live in Florida. That means that when hurricane season hits, we’re always keeping one eye on the weather. If there are any tropical storms, or worse, heading our way, we want to be on top of it.

Fortunately, in the eight years that we’ve lived here, Hurricane Irma has been our only serious threat. Even then, we considered ourselves lucky to just lose power for a few days. However, I’ve learned that the best defense is to be prepared. This starts with having the right foods handy.

How To Make A Hurricane Food Kit

When a hurricane hits, even indirectly, power outages are a common occurrence. This means you’ll need to have plenty of non-perishable foods to get you through until you’re back up and running.

Foods to stock up with for hurricane season

I always make sure I shop Publix well in advance because I’ve learned the hard way that once word gets out that a storm is coming, all the good stuff starts flying off the grocery store shelves.

This is the best time to do it too! With their Hurricane Preparedness Extra Savings promotion, running through 6/17, you can save on the emergency foods you need for your hurricane food kit.

Here’s what we stocked up on for our Hurricane Food Kit:

Bumble Bee Protein On The Run – I already love these tuna kits for quick on-the-go snacks, but they’re perfect for hurricane season as well. They come with a mini can of tuna, crackers, and even a sweet caramel for dessert, and during the Publix promotion, you can take $.75 off any 3.5-ounce package.

Bumble Bee Quick Catch Bowl – I love Bumble Bee tuna but just recently discovered their Quick Catch Bowl. There are several varieties to choose from, and the great thing about these is you can choose to heat them or eat them at room temperature. If you lose power, you’ll have complete meals that you can eat straight from the bowl. Stock up during the promotion and save $.75 off any 6-ounce package.

Glory Foods Vegetables – Of course, the tried-and-true staple for any emergency are canned foods (just remember you’ll need a manual can opener too). They’re one of the easiest non-perishable food items to keep on hand because they have such a long shelf life.

We picked up some corn, carrots, beans, and more for our hurricane food kit. During the promotion, Glory Foods Vegetables or Beans (14.5-15.5 ounces) are 4 for $6. However, when you use the additional Digital Coupon for $1 off four, the final price goes down to 4 for $5.

BodyArmor Sportwater – You’ll need plenty of bottled water, so you’ll definitely want that on your shopping list. When you buy BodyArmor SportWater, you’ll get the additional benefits of Alkaline pH9+ and electrolytes. During the promotion, you can stock up to save $1 off a BodyArmor SportWater 6 pack (20-ounce size).

Other Ways To Prepare For Hurricane Season

When Jim Cantore starts popping up on our screen, we get prepping! Here are some other hurricane supplies you should have on hand:

Safety plan – A good emergency plan is so important! Gather everyone for a family meeting and discuss your hurricane safety plan should you be in the path of the storm. This includes how family members will respond at home as well as in the event of an evacuation.

Flashlights and batteries – Be sure you have plenty of flashlights on hand (maybe even one for each member of the family). Check the batteries as well. The last thing you want is to be fumbling in the dark trying to put fresh batteries in.

Weather radio – If the power goes out, a weather radio will help you keep track of what’s happening. Some also double as phone chargers, have built-in lights, and more, so having one is always a good idea.

First aid kit – This is one of those things that you hope you won’t need but will be glad to have on hand if you do.

Once you’ve put together your hurricane food kit and other emergency items, you can set them aside and forget about them. If you are being evacuated, make sure you have all you need with this Hurricane Evacuation Check List! Now you’ll have one less thing to worry about should a hurricane head your way!

Don’t forget, shop through June 17th to shop and save during the Publix Hurricane Preparedness promotion!
