Toilet Paper Roll Crab

It’s a crazy world right now! Just under two months ago, life was business as usual. My girls and I were spending weekends hitting the theme parks and I even took a short cruise through the Bahamas.

Fast forward to today and things have been turned upside down. We’re spending our days at home and with all the schools closed indefinitely, I’ve been trying to figure out this homeschooling thing (thank goodness for technology)!

School only takes up half the day though, so I’ve been trying to come up with new ways to entertain the girls. We’ve been doing lots of crafting and indoor activities for kids, including making toilet paper roll crafts.

We like crafting with toilet paper rolls because they’re easy and can usually be made with stuff that we already have lying around. I mean, with everyone at home for the time being, we’ve had plenty of toilet paper rolls to play around with!

That’s why this toilet paper roll crab is so perfect. We already have the materials and it’s easy enough that my eight year old can make it on her own. That’s a big help, since I’m still trying to get work done during the day too. So, let’s pull out the crafting supplies and let the kids get creative!

Easy and fun, this crab toilet paper roll craft is the perfect way to keep the kids busy on a rainy day.

Materials

Instructions

  • Cut red construction paper to fit around the toilet paper rolls and glue in place.
Covering toilet paper roll with construction paper
  • Cut two of the pipe cleaners in half. Setting one piece aside, take the three remaining pieces and twist together in the center.

  • Create feet by bending each pipe cleaner at the end and glue to the bottom of the toilet paper roll.
  • Cut two circles from red construction paper and cut a wedge out of each one.
  • Take the remaining piece of pipe cleaner and cut it in half. Glue each circle to the end of a pipe cleaner, then glue the other end of the pipe cleaner to sides of the toilet paper roll to make the claws.
  • Push two toothpicks through the top of the toilet paper roll.
  • Glue googly eyes to the end of each toothpick and your toilet paper roll crab is ready to roll…or crabwalk!

Notes

While we love to use glue guns for crafting, younger kids may not be old enough to use a glue gun safely. For those kids, white Elmer’s glue will work just fine. I would recommend gluing the eyes to the toothpicks first, letting them dry, then inserting them into the toilet paper roll.
