If you are new to my blog, you may not know that I recently became a stay at home mom. I taught Kindergarten for 14 years but when we moved to Florida last fall, my hubby and I decided that I would quit working until our youngest goes to pre-k. I couldn’t have been more excited…I was getting a two year vacation!!! While I loved being a teacher, working full time while raising two kids is exhausting! I couldn’t wait to live this life of luxury that I’d always envied! Fast forward 10 months and I’ve learned some things about this life of luxury (mainly that it’s not quite as luxurious as it looks)
*I still don’t get any sleep!
When I taught, I left so early that my husband got our daughter ready for school every morning. Somehow I had forgotten that I would be in charge of this now. While I do love being able to get her ready for school, dressing her in her cutest outfits and making sure she has a matching bow in her hair, I actually get even less sleep now. Since I don’t have to get up early for a “real” job (for lack of a better term), I tend to stay up later at night working on my blog, watching my latest Netflix addiction or just enjoying a glass of wine (or two) with hubby if he’s not working. Before I know it, 2am rolls around and I have force myself go to bed (I’ve always been a night owl).
*Free time? What free time?
What happened to all that free time I thought I’d have to sit around watching soap operas and eating bon-bons? Okay, so I hate soap operas and don’t eat bon-bons, but you get the point. It’s amazing how fast the days go by! By the time I drop the oldest off at school, run errands with my youngest, go home for lunch and naptime (which is when I do dishes, laundry, tidy up, etc), it’s time to head back to the carpool lane at school. I was sure I’d be meticulously working on photo albums, organizing my house and living a Martha Stewart life! LOL…the joke is on me! I apologize now to all my SAHM friends for thinking all along that you just ate bon-bons and watched soap operas all day!!!
*My house is NOT clean 24/7
I used to think that if only I were a SAHM, my house would be clean all the time (I can hear the other SAHM’s laughing right now). I’m talking so clean not even a speck of dust on the molding…and I’ve never in my life cleaned that! Ummm…that has definitely not happened! Even if you do clean up, with two kids it’s a mess again in 5 minutes. Don’t even get me started on the crazy mess that my three year old calls a bedroom. Her idea of playing is to dump out each and every container of toys until we have to wonder what the floor even looks like! Sometimes I just have to channel Elsa and “Let It Go”!
*I am still not a fitness queen
I thought I’d be a fitness queen, working out every day and looking like Elle Macpherson. That, unfortunately, has not happened…NOT…EVEN…CLOSE! I no longer have a treadmill and gyms with childcare aren’t cheap. Running is free and easy but my hubby works a lot and I can only do it when he’s home to watch our little one. Okay, let’s be honest here. Sometimes he is home during the day and it doesn’t make a bit of difference. Excuses, excuses…just pass the bon-bons! Maybe I’ll try some exercise videos…right after I finish binge watching Orange Is The New Black!
*The Gourmet Meals Are Lacking
When I worked full time, I usually just came home, threw chicken in the oven, rice in a pot and cooked up a quick veggie. Sometimes I just grabbed the emergency frozen pizza that I always keep handy (you should NEVER be without emergency pizza and emergency wine)! I thought that when I wasn’t working, I would be creating fantastic, gourmet dishes for every meal. I do branch out sometimes but nobody will be mistaking me for Julia Child anytime soon!
That being said, I’m having the time of my life and I absolutely LOVE being a SAHM! I feel really lucky to be able to do this, if only for a short time. I get more quality time with my family, which is really what it’s all about. I have to say, despite the constant mess, lack of free time and frozen pizzas, this stay-at-home-mom thing is a pretty awesome gig!
