We rang in the new year and it’s time to do some goal setting. I’m taking a look back at 2016 and setting some goals that will make 2017 the best year yet!
Wow…is it really 2017 already? There were a few ups and downs this year but overall 2016 was a pretty great year, both personally and professionally. It’s been a busy year as well. Not only do I write my own blog, but I’ve just launched a second blog with Hannah from Eat, Drink and Save Money and Gina from Money Savvy Living. Beautiful Budget Life was created to show that you can still live life beautifully, even if you’re on a budget.
I really only had two goals at the beginning of this year, to get published in the Huffington Post and Scary Mommy. I managed to accomplish one of the two. All of the posts that I submitted to Scary Mommy got turned down. Normally I would have continued to submit but their content seemed to get more serious this year. It wasn’t such a great fit anymore because the posts I write are much more lighthearted. On the bright side, if I were only going to get one of the two, Huffington Post would be the one I’d choose so it still worked out okay.
I’d had a couple glasses of wine the night I wrote the post that got me in the door at HuffPost. A challenging day with my three year old had inspired me and I was laughing hysterically as I wrote it. I even decided it was so good that I would submit it to Ariana Huffington herself. The next morning I reread it and though I still liked it, it wasn’t nearly as funny without the wine. Maybe Ariana had a glass of her own before she read it because she responded a few days later welcoming me as a contributor. Crazy, I know!
The Year In Review
This was the year that I became a TravelingMom, which means I’ll be writing travel posts for their site twice a month. You can find me there as the “Do It All TravelingMom”. I’m already loving it and while it’s going to be a lot more work for me, it’s totally worth it! Traveling is my passion and I’m surprised it took me so long to start writing about it.
Somehow I also got invited by Disney to attend the Disney Social Media Moms Conference. In the blogging world this a coveted ticket and it’s a huge honor to be invited. When I got the e-mail last month, I had to read it twice just to make sure I was really invited. I’m not sure how I got so lucky but I’m super excited and can’t wait to meet the other bloggers and find out what Disney has in store for us!
Of course, while it was a great year, I still have so much that I want to accomplish. Instead of just two goals this time, I’ve made a list. I dream big and have a tendency to put a little too much on my plate, but it motivates me to work that much harder!
Here’s what I hope to accomplish…
2017 Blogging Goals
Finish the EBA course
This is a big one. I signed up for the Elite Blog Academy course in April 2015 and started off strong. However, it’s a really intense class and there’s so much to it that I took a break and never got started again. I know that this class will do wonders to grow my blog though and I’m ready to hit the books again.
Grow my traffic
In December 2015, my page views were 6,873 for the month. My blog has been growing and this past December my page views were 32,839. While I’m happy with the progress that I’ve made, I want to see those numbers jump even higher this year. My goal is to be getting 100,000 pageviews per month by December 2017. It’s a lofty goal but I really feel like I can make it happen.
Make my old teacher’s salary
In 2015, I earned $1,970 from my blog. This year my earnings jumped to $18,921. However, I’m still not close to making what I did as a teacher and we’ve got bills to pay. The good part is that with the growth I’ve seen over the last year, I believe it’s totally doable and this is one of my biggest goals for the upcoming year!
Send out a regular newsletter
I have been terrible about putting out my newsletter and need to be more consistant. I’d love to say that I can do it every week but with all my commitments, I think I’m better off shooting for every other week. Hopefully I’ll be able to stay more on top of it this year. Feel free to sign up and see how I do!
Redesign my site
This is something I want to do sooner than later. It won’t be anything earth shattering but there are a few aesthetic changes I’d like to make in the next couple months.
Create videos (and be good at it!)
This is my biggest goal of all, especially since I have the most to learn in this area. Video is definitely the future of blogging and I’d like to be able to create professional looking recipes and other videos.
Figure out Snapchat
There are so many social media sites that come and go that it’s just impossible to keep up. I went to a blog conference in September 2015 and Periscope was all the rage. A year later, nobody was talking about it anymore. However, it looks like Snapchat is here to stay and I need to jump on board. It actually looks like a fun platform but I just need to take the time to play around with it.
Make Beautiful Budget Life a huge success
We are so excited about Beautiful Budget Life and it’s fun starting a site when I actually know what I’m doing…as opposed to when I started this one! I don’t have any specific numerical goals for BBL because the sky is the limit. We’d just like to get our name out there, grow our traffic and maybe add additional contributors. If you’re interested in becoming a contributor, feel free to sign up here.
I’m still trying to decide if I have too many goals or not enough but this seemed like a pretty good number. Let’s meet back here in a year and we’ll see how I did!
What are your goals for 2017? Are you dreaming big or are you going to take it one day at a time?
