Spray two 9x13 pans with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.
Place half the butter (sliced into small pieces) and half the marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl. Place the other half of the marshmallows and butter in a second bowl.
8 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter, 14 Cups Mini Marshmallows
One at a time, place the bowls in the microwave and cook for 1.5 minutes on high, stopping to stir every 20 seconds. Marshmallows should be free of lumps with the butter completely melted.
Add the red food coloring to one bowl and the blue food coloring to the other. Mix each bowl until there are no color streaks remaining.
¼ Teaspoon Red Gel Food Coloring, ¼ Teaspoon Blue Gel Food Coloring
Add half the cereal to one bowl and the other half to the other bowl.
10 Cups Rice Krispies
Fold cereal gently into each bowl until it's fully coated in the melted marshmallow mixture.
Pour the red mixture into one prepared pan and the blue mixture into the other. Gently press each one into an even layer covering the entire pan.
Cover the top of each pan with patriotic sprinkles, then let both pans sit for about 30 minutes or until fully set.
Patriotic Sprinkles
Once set, use your cookie cutter to cut out as many stars as you can from both the blue and red Rice Krispie treats. Sometimes I'll use a small circle cookie cutter to make little circles from the leftover pieces. They make fun little bite size snacks!
Place the frosting in a piping bag with tip (I used the Ateco 864 tip). Add frosting to the "un-sprinkled" side of half the stars. You don't need to go all the way up the skinny portion of the star’s tips.
1 Can White Frosting
Place the unfrosted stars on top of the frosted ones, with the sprinkle sides facing away from the frosting. Serve and enjoy!
