Print and cut out the Monster Book pattern. The template will make a 4"x6" book cover but you can adjust the pattern to fit any size book.
Trace the Monster Book cover pattern onto brown felt, then cut.
If you want to give your cover more of a fur-like texture, gently use sandpaper to sand the top of the felt with twisting motions (optional).
Trace two sets of teeth onto pale yellow or off-white felt, then cut out with scissors. Because these are monster teeth, you don't have to follow the pattern exactly.
To make the forked tongue, trace the tongue shape onto red felt, then cut out with scissors.
Use the glue gun to attach teeth to the front of the book, at the top edge and bottom edge of the book cover. Then, open the book to any random page and attach the straight edge of the tongue to that page. You can also attach it to the inside of the book cover, or leave it loose and use it as a bookmark. .
Starting at one edge, use the hot glue glue to attach the brown cover to the outside of the book. Wrap the cover around the book, gluing as you go, then secure the opposite edge. It's best to do it in small sections to be sure the glue holds. However, don't glue the spine. If you do, the book may not open and close easily.
Finally, attach four large wiggly eyes to the top of the Monster book. If you want your monster to look a little sillier, use different sizes of wiggly eyes.
Notes
If making the project with younger kids, you can use regular liquid glue instead of a glue gun. It will just take longer to dry.
Want to get really fancy? Try using faux fur instead of brown felt. The fake fur is a little harder to trace and cut, so younger children may need some help with that part.
If you don't have a glue gun, you can use tacky glue or Mod Podge instead. It'll just take a little extra time to dry.
To substitute felt for wiggly eyes, just cut four white felt circles, then smaller tiny circles from black felt. Glue the black circles to the white and voila, monster eyes.
You can use other colors if that's what you have on hand. Give your monster white teeth, a pink tongue or even change the color of the fur to give this craft your own fun twist.
