Recipe Variations

  • Cake mix: Have fun and swap out the flavors with the flavors of cake mix. You can use Funfetti cake mix, chocolate cake mix or even strawberry cake mix.
  • Sprinkles: Sprinkles make everything more fun. Add some into batter before baking the cake, or after baking when you mix in the frosting.
  • Frosting option: We used vanilla frosting but you can use cream cheese frosting, chocolate or strawberry frosting.
  • Extracts: We used orange extract to make these just like the ones you’d buy at the Wizarding World Of Harry Potter at Universal Studios, but you can use any flavor you prefer. Almond, lemon and coconut extract are all great choices, or skip the extract to make them taste more like regular cake balls.
  • Chocolate coating: While I prefer white chocolate with the orange cake flavor and candy, you can use any flavor you prefer. Milk chocolate and dark chocolate are other popular choices.

Exploding Bonbon Recipe FAQs

Can I make these bonbons ahead of time?

You can, but the Pop Rocks may not keep their “fizz”.

Can I freeze leftovers?

You sure can! For best results, before freezing the them, make sure they are completely cooled. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze them for about an hour. The short pre-freeze helps them from sticking together. They’ll stay fresh in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.

How long can they sit out?

They can safely sit out at a party or other gathering for up to a couple of hours. Because they have frosting mixed in, it’s best to keep them in the fridge when not serving them.

Do I have to use a box mix cake?

This recipe works with any kind of cake, from a scratch-made cake to an unfrosted one you pick up at a bakery.

I thought this would be fun to send in to my son’s AP chemistry class as a birthday treat for his teacher (she’s a friend of mine). The pop rocks inside the cake balls just melted, some even oozed out. I thought you would be experiencing that ‘popping’ when you bit into the cakes but that was not the case.

      1. Hi Elle, I’m so sorry you had that issue! Did you let the cake cool completely first? If it’s still warm when you add the candy to the middle, that could cause the pop rocks to melt.
