Red White and Blue Cake Pops

You can never go wrong with cake, right? If cake is good, cake balls are even better! Whether your throwing or attending a July 4th party this summer, you’re going to want plenty of 4th of July desserts and these red, white and blue cake balls will be a big hit!

The best part is how easy these are to make. You know I’m all about the easy desserts, from 4th of July marshmallow pops to red, white and blue ice cream cookie sandwiches. These red, white and blue cake balls are pretty fun too! Now you can add these delicious bite size treats to the mix.

How To Make Red, White & Blue Cake Balls

Step 1: Bake a banana cake, either from a box mix or from scratch. Let cool.

Step 2: To make the frosting, combine butter, powdered sugar, milk (or cream) and vanilla to a large bowl. Mix until well combined.

Step 3: Crumble the cake over your frosting and mix well with your hands or a low speed mixer.

Step 4: Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper. Form the cake mixture into balls approximately a tablespoon in size and place on the baking sheet. Place in freezer for 30 minutes.

Step 5: Melt candy melts or white chocolate in a bowl. If the chocolate is too thick, thin it with vegetable oil, a little at a time, until the consistency is smooth and creamy.

Step 6: Place the cake ball into your melted white chocolate, rolling it around the bowl gently to coat it evenly. Place the chocolate coated cake pop back on the parchment paper and give it a few minutes to set.

What Can I Use Instead of Candy Melts?

Candy melts are my favorite ingredients for making cake balls. They give the cake balls a nice finish with a delicious yet subtle taste. However, if you don’t have candy melts on hand, white chocolate chips make a great alternative.

For the purpose of this recipe, you’ll, of course, need to use white chocolate chips. Melt them over a double burner, adding vegetable oil a little at a time if the chocolate is too thick.

Before dipping the cake balls, set some of the chocolate aside to color with red and blue food coloring and drizzle over the top.

How Can I Make the Cake Balls in the Same Size?

To make sure all your 4th of July cake balls are the same size, use a cookie scoop or mini ice cream scoop. Use it to scoop the cake mixture, then gently roll it between the palms of your hands to bind the crumbs and give them that nice, round shape.

How Do I Store the 4th of July Cake Balls?

Your cake balls can stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to a week if stored in an airtight plastic container (perfect for when you want a little midnight snack!). You can also make them in a big batch and freeze them for up to a month.

If you’re planning on freezing them, a vacuum sealer will help them stay fresh without getting soggy. If you don’t have a vacuum sealer, wrap each pop in plastic wrap or foil, then place them into a large plastic storage bag.
