Why We Love This Recipe

  • Authentic queso: This easy homemade white queso is made just like authentic Mexican restaurant queso.
  • Quality ingredients: No Velveeta cheese in this queso recipe! It’s made with real cheese that you get from the deli counter at your local grocery store.
  • Easy to customize:  The amount of heat can be adjusted to how your family loves it.

Ingredients

White Queso Dip Ingredients
  • White American cheese
  • Pepper jack cheese
  • Cream cheese, cut into cubes and softened
  • Whole milk, more as needed for a thinner dip
  • Canned diced tomatoes OR diced green chilies
  • Garlic powder
  • Chili powder
  • Ground cumin
  • Jalapeños, tomatoes or pico de gallo for garnish (optional)

How to Make the Best White Queso Dip

Step 1. Cube the cheese and cream cheese into large chunks and add to a 10-inch medium skillet over medium heat.

Step 2. Add the milk and heat until the cheese is melted, then turn the heat to low.

Step 3. Add the chopped green chiles (drained) and seasonings. Stir to combine.

Step 4. If it’s not spicy enough, add pickled jalapenos along with 1-2 tablespoons of the liquid.

Note: If the dip is too thin, allow it to cook for a few minutes longer and it should thicken. If the dip is too thick, then add more milk or water, one tablespoon at a time. You could also add a little more of the canned jalapeno juice for more of a kick.

White Queso Dip Recipe Variations and Add-ins

  • Pico de Gallo: Instead of adding diced tomatoes, you can mix in fresh Pico de Gallo.
  • Chorizo: Make your dip with browned and crumbled chorizo.
  • Beans: Layer the cheese on top over a bowl of cooked black beans or some refried beans.
  • Corn: Include sweet and juicy canned corn kernels for a little bit of extra crunch.
  • Cilantro: Give the dip a fresh pop of flavor with finely chopped fresh cilantro.
  • Smoked paprika: Smoked paprika gives the dips an earthy and smoky flavor.
  • Lime juice: Squeezed fresh lime juice adds a delicious tangy twist.
  • Cotija cheese: For a delicious topping, sprinkle crumbled cotija cheese on top of the white dip.
  • Cayenne pepper: If you like super spicy dip, add in a pinch of cayenne. Or for a super mild version, you can skip adding chiles and peppers completely.

Queso Blanco Dip Recipe FAQs

What other kinds of cheese can I use?

Monterey jack, muenster, fontina, Colby jack and provolone cheese can be used, but the texture may be different. White American really is the key to the white color and the cheesy, gooey texture.

Can I make this queso blanco recipe in the microwave?

You sure can. Just heat the cheese for five minutes in the microwave, making sure to stir every minute. Add the remaining ingredients and give it another good stir.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Though it’s best served immediately, you can make it ahead of time and reheat it. When reheating, add a splash of milk, evaporated milk, half and half or heavy cream to loosen it up.
