How To Make A Leprechaun Trap

If you want to catch a leprechaun for St. Patrick’s Day, you’ll need to know how to make a leprechaun trap. This fun leprechaun trap is not only easy to make, but it uses supplies that you either already have or that can be found for next to nothing. Budget friendly and simple? It’s the perfect St. Patrick’s Day craft!
With a name like O’Driscoll, St. Patrick’s Day is a pretty big deal in my house. While the St. Patrick’s Day cocktails don’t flow quite as freely as they did before kids came along, we still have a lot of fun making St. Patrick’s Day recipes and leprechaun traps.
We’ve made an Under The Rainbow Leprechaun Trap and a Rooftop Garden Leprechaun Trap the past two years and now we wanted to try something all new. Our leprechaun is going to love this leprechaun slide! (Get the printable tutorial at the end of the post)
Supplies
What You’ll Need:
- Large cereal box
- (2) 12×18 sheets of green construction paper
- (1) Gold glitter cardstock
- Mini St. Patrick’s Day Hat*
- (2) Shamrock necklaces*
- (2) Gold straws
- Gold coins*
- (4) cotton balls
- *You can order through these Amazon if you don’t feel like shopping but I found them much cheaper at Dollar Tree

How To Make A Leprechaun Trap
Start by cutting the front and one side off your cereal box.
Hot glue the bottom of the box back together.
Cover the box and the front piece with green construction paper.
Glue the bigger part of the box to the flat front piece.
Cut up gold straws and use for a ladder. Rainbow colored popsicle sticks also work great.
I had an extra piece of straw so I glued it to the inside to give the slide a little extra support.
This shamrock necklace came two for a dollar at the Dollar Tree. They make perfect leprechaun decor.
Cut the pieces apart and hot glue the large shamrocks to each end of the straws.
Making The Leprechaun Slide
Now cut out two long strips from the glitter cardstock. I glued these to the last piece of card board I’d cut out but you would really be fine just gluing them back to back.
Use lots of hot glue to attach the slide at the top. Once the hot glue has dried, glue the slide to the side of the box too.
Since I started with two necklaces, I had more shamrocks left over. I decided my leprechaun trap needed a little extra decor. I glued the small pieces to the front side of the slide and larger pieces to the back wall.
Take one of the hats and clue pieces of the glitter cardstock to it. You want them to be just strong enough to hold up the gold coins.
Glue the hat at the bottom of the slide and cover with gold coins. Now when the leprechaun slides down to get the coins, he’ll slip right through into the trap.
I also added some signs that I’d originally made for my Under The Rainbow Leprechaun Trap. Feel free to print the signs to use them for your own trap.
Add A Rainbow
Since we all know that leprechauns love rainbows, I made a quick rainbow and attached it to the top. You can make your own, or print this rainbow and cut it out. I used cardstock to make it a little sturdier.
Glue the rainbow to the top of the leprechaun trap, then add a couple cotton balls on each side for clouds.
Now you’re ready to catch a leprechaun!
All the little guy has to do is climb the stairs and slide down into the gold covered trap!
You’re kids are going to love this! My favorite part is when I ask them what they’re going to do with all their leprechaun gold. Aside from the usual “buy toys”, I usually get some pretty funny answers!
