Is Cake Mix Dip Safe to Eat?
You should always heat treat the cake mix first, just to be sure it’s safe to eat. This step is necessary when working with cake mixes or anything containing raw flour in order to kill any harmful bacteria.
How Do I Heat Treat Boxed Cake Mix?
. There are two easy methods you can use:
- Oven method: Sprinkle the raw cake mix onto the parchment lined baking sheet, smoothing it into an even layer. Bake in the oven on 350 degrees F for 5 minutes, then allow it to cool to room temperature.
- Microwave method: Place the cake mix in a microwave safe bowl. Heat in 30 seconds, stirring in between each one. Be sure to stir it well so the cake mix doesn’t burn. Continue to do this until the cake mix reaches 165 degrees F on an instant read thermometer.

What to Serve with Easter Bunny Butt Dessert Ball
You can serve this bunny butt dip ball with just about any sweet dippable snack you’d like. Here are some of our top suggestions:
- Graham crackers
- Vanilla wafers
- Golden Oreos
- Animal crackers
- Fresh fruit – apple or pear slices and strawberries are great choices.
Top Recipe Tips:
- To make the paw prints look more realistic, hide the M on the M&M’s by placing the printed side down.
- To help secure the different parts of the bunny butt, use toothpicks or short wooden skewers to hold them together. Just be sure to remove them when you get to that part of the dip.
- You’ll want to use full fat cream cheese for this recipe. That’s because the consistency of full fat is thicker than reduced or low fat and will help keep the bunny shape.
- To prevent the coconut from drying out too much, you can make the cheese ball mixture in advance. Then wait until just before assembling to roll the individual balls.
- For best results, wrap with plastic wrap and chill the cheeseballs in the fridge for a couple of hours before serving.

Dessert Ball Recipe Variations
- Cake mix: Feel free to swap the white cake mix for Funfetti cake mix, strawberry cake mix, yellow cake mix, or even a lemon cake mix
- Paws: Don’t have pink M&M’s? You can use pink jelly beans or even little dots of pink frosting instead.
- Shape: This bunny is the perfect dessert for Easter but you can also shape the cheese into an Easter egg and make M&M strips. That’s not all though! You can use red and green sprinkles and shape it into a Christmas tree or use Halloween colors to make a witches hat. You could even make one for Super Bowl with your favorite team colors…the possibilities are endless.
- Skip the coconut: If you’re not a fan of coconut, you can roll the cream cheese mixture in powdered sugar instead. It won’t have the same furry appearance, but the dip will still taste delicious. White chocolate shavings make another great option.
