📖How To Make Christmas Truffles
Step 1. You’ll want to heat treat the cake mix before you start, just so it’s safe to eat uncooked. Place it in a microwave safe bowl and heat in 30 second increments, stirring in between. Continue until it reaches 165 degrees, then set aside.
Step 2. In the large bowl of a stand mixer (fitted with the paddle attachment), mix the room temperature cream cheese until soft and creamy.
Step 3. Slowly add the cake mix a little at a time, mixing after each addition, until it’s completely incorporated.
Step 4. Cover the bowl and place in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
Step 5. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place sprinkles or sanding sugar in a shallow dish or bowl.
Step 6. Using a tablespoon or a small cookie scoop, scoop the truffle mixture in 1 tablespoon scoops and roll mixture into balls with the palms of your hands.
Step 7. Roll cake balls in red and green sprinkles and place on the lined baking sheet.
Step 8. Repeat until all of the cake batter and cream cheese mixture has been rolled into balls and covered with sprinkles.
Step 9. Place back in the fridge for at least an hour or until ready to serve.
Easy Truffle Variations
- Chocolate Truffle Recipe: If you have a chocolate lover in your life, you can just swap out the white cake mix with chocolate cake mix. These homemade chocolate truffles would be great with a little mocha extract added to them.
- Candy Cane Truffles: Give your truffles a peppermint twist! Instead of red and green sprinkles, roll them in finely crushed candy canes. You can also add them to the dough with a drop of peppermint extract, then roll them in sprinkles.
- Chocolate Chips Truffles: The best part about this recipe is there are so many great add-ins. Mini dark chocolate or milk chocolate chips make these creamy truffles even more decadent!
- Sugar Cookie Truffles: If you love sugar cookies, swap out the cake mix for a package of sugar cookie mix.
- Nutty Truffles: Add some chopped pecans or walnuts for a nutty twist.
- Boozy Christmas Chocolate Truffles: You can give these truffles rum ball flavor by adding a couple of teaspoons of rum or your favorite bourbon.
- Red Velvet Cake Truffles: Red velvet cake is always a hit at any holiday party so why not red velvet truffles! Swap out the white cake mix with red velvet for the perfect dessert that’s festive and super tasty!
How Long Can These Truffles Sit Out?
These truffles can stay out for a couple of hours. However, the cream cheese will begin to soften after awhile and they’ll need to be placed back in the fridge.
How Do I Store Homemade Truffles?
The cream cheese is dairy based, so you’ll need to store them in the fridge when not serving. The best way to store them is in an airtight container in a single layer. Place a layer of parchment paper between the layers.
Other Festive Ways to Decorate No Bake Truffles
We went traditional with red and green for pretty Christmas day colors. But the possibilities are endless with creative ways to decorate these delicious treats for other celebrations. Here are some of our favorites:
- For anniversary or New Years truffles, use gold and silver jimmies or sanding sugar
- Cheer for your favorite team on game day with sprinkles representing the team’s colors.
- If you have serious chocolate fans in your life, skip the sprinkles all together and roll them in cocoa powder. The slightly bitter flavor works great with the sweet cake mix. These would be great for Valentine’s Day.
- Pastel sprinkles are so pretty for Easter or other springtime celebrations.
- Give them an extra special touch by drizzling a tiny bit of melted chocolate on the top of each truffle. If you want to try this, keep in mind they truffles are not super thick like baked cake pops so you’ll want to add a fine drizzle. You can use any type of chocolate or candy melts you’d like.
