How to Make a Butterbeer Frosting Board

Butter boards have been all the talk lately, so I had to jump on “board” with a delicious and sweet twist using my favorite frosting in the world, butterbeer frosting! I make a similar recipe for these Harry Potter inspired Butterbeer Cupcakes. While they are one of the best cupcakes you’ll ever make, it’s truly the frosting that always that gets rave reviews.

One of these things that makes the frosting so wonderful is that it’s dotted with chopped up butterscotch chips that gives it the best butterscotch flavor! It’s awesome served with short bread cookies, graham crackers, pretzels or slices of your favorite fresh fruit.

If you really want to go all out, you can serve this dessert board with homemade sugar cookies in the shape of owls or pumpkins for Thanksgiving or even some cute little gingerbread men for the perfect dessert at Christmas!

Step 7. Place a dry cutting board on a flat surface. Using a rubber spatula or an offset spatula, spread some of the butterbeer buttercream frosting on the cutting board. Start from the top of the board, stopping about 1/2 inch from the edges. Otherwise it’ll be hard to handle the board.

What is Butterbeer

If you’re new to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you may be wondering what butterbeer is. This butterscotch flavored drink is a popular beverage that was made famous in the Harry Potter series.

In fact, it’s the drink of choice for Harry and his friends when the visit the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley or the Three Broomsticks Inn at Hogsmeade.

It’s described as tasting a little like less-sickly butterscotch, which doesn’t sound all that appealing but is actually really delicious. It’s been the inspiration for lots of tasty recipes like Butterbeer Ice Cream, Hot Butterbeer and this fun Boozy Butterbeer.

Frosting Board Tips and Variations

  • If you use unsalted butter, you will want to add just a pinch of flakey sea salt or kosher salt to help balance out the flavors of the frosting.
  • If you use a really sharp chef’s knife to rough chop the butterscotch chips, the irregular bits give the frosting a really nice texture.
  • An alternative to chopping up the butterscotch chips is to leave them whole. It’ll still have the same taste and cool butterscotch frosting board look but with slightly larger chunks.
  • To make for an easy clean up, you can put parchment paper on your board before adding your frosting.
  • Just like with butter boards, you can add a drizzle of something sweet over the top of the prepared board. For this frosting board, caramel or butterscotch sauce would be perfect.
  • To give the board more of a rustic look, I just add a dollop of buttercream frosting to the board at a time and then smear it out. But it you want your board to look a little fancier, you can add the frosting to a piping bag with a large star tip and pipe a design onto the cutting board.
  • Add even more crunch to the frosting with chopped pecans or walnuts. You can mix them in or sprinkle them on top of the butterscotch frosting.

Can I Make the Frosting in Advance?

Butterbeer frosting is a type of buttercream, so as long as it’s stored in an airtight container or covered tightly with plastic wrap, you can make it up to a week in advance. Just take it out of the fridge about 1/2 hour before preparing it so it’ll spread more easily.

What Are Other Ways to Use Butterbeer Frosting

You can use this dreamy frosting to make Harry Potter butterbeer cupcakes or a Harry Potter butterbeer cake. You could also use it to frost these Harry Potter Butterbeer Cookies.
