Boozy Butterbeer
If you love the Harry Potter series of books or movies as much as we do, then you probably know all about butterbeer. Found at the Three Broomsticks Inn in Hogsmeade, it’s the drink of choice for Harry and the other Hogwarts students.
While our traditional Harry Potter butterbeer recipe is non-alcoholic, this delicious version is dedicated to all the adult Potter fans. It’s got all the rich and creamy flavors of cream soda, vanilla and butterscotch, with the perfect amount of boozy kick.
But if you’re looking for the perfect cocktail for your next party, this adult butterbeer recipe is guaranteed to bring out the kid in everyone!
Why We Love This Recipe
- They make the perfect alcoholic drinks for Halloween or parties with a Harry Potter theme.
- It’s a popular wizarding beverage that can double as a dessert and an adult cocktail.
- All you have to do to make these is pour and stir – no magic tricks required.
Ingredients Needed
- Regular cream soda – we used regular cream soda but feel free to use diet cream soda if you want to cut back on the sugar.
- Vanilla vodka – the vanilla flavor pairs perfectly with the caramel in the butterscotch liqueur.
- Butterscotch schnapps – a smooth and rich butterscotch liqueur, this gives you subtle flavors of butter and brown sugar.
- Whipped cream – we used the store-bought kind this time, but you can make the real deal with heavy cream.
- Butterscotch syrup -you can buy this ready made in grocery stores or use your own homemade butterscotch sauce.
How to Make this Adult Butterbeer Cocktail
Step 1. Start by pouring cream soda into glass mug or tall drinking glass.
Step 2. Next, add the vanilla vodka.
Step 3. Then, pour in the butterscotch schnapps and give it a good stir.
Step 4. Finally, add whipped topping and a generous drizzle of butterscotch.
How to Make Your Own Butterscotch Whipped Cream
We love the store bought version but for extra flavor, we love making our own whipped topping with a sweet butterscotch twist.
Just use an electric mixer to whip up some heavy whipping cream, a little powdered sugar and a tablespoon or two of butterscotch topping. This makes a great topping for our frozen butterbeer too.
Variations and Add-ins
- Buttery flavor: One of the things that makes such a popular drink is the buttery flavor. For even more flavor, add a little bit of butter extract to the whipped topping.
- Alcoholic Frozen Butterbeer: Pour cream soda into ice cube trays and freeze. Then just add the soda cubes, with the schnapps and vodka, to a blender and blend until it’s nice and slushy.
- Alcohol: The measurements in the recipe card are suggestions. If you prefer more vanilla flavor, you can add more vanilla vodka and the same thing for butterscotch flavors. Add more cream soda (or less alcohol) if you’d like your cocktail a little weaker.
What is Butterbeer Made Of?
While the Harry Potter books never give away the recipe, our traditional homemade Butterbeer recipe using just three ingredients, cream soda, butterscotch syrup, sweet, whipped cream. It’s simple and delicious and tastes just like the version at Universal Studios.
Other variations sometimes include rum extract, butter extract and even regular butter (but we still love ours the best!)
What Does Butterbeer Taste Like?
We absolutely love the version at the Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, but if you’ve never tried it, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. It was at the top of our to-do list the first time we visited Universal and it didn’t disappoint!
Found at the Three Broomsticks Inn in Hogsmeade, this is the drink of choice for Harry and the other Hogwarts students. In the books, J.K. Rowling describes butterbeer as being a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch with a slight alcoholic content. The version at the parks is definitely on the sweet side, with just the perfect amount of butterscotch flavor.
While you’ll only find non-alcoholic versions of butterbeer in the parks, ours has a fun kick to take the fun up a notch for the grownups!
How To Make This For A Crowd
If you’re hosting a fall party, you can make this recipe in a larger batch. Just serve it in a glass punch bowl and let everyone serve themselves. Try using these measurements for a 12-servings batch (they can be adjusted however you like based on your tastes).
- 2 cups butterscotch schnapps
- 1.5 cups vanilla vodka
- 4 liters cream soda
- 3-4 cups of homemade whipped topping
- 10-12 ounces butterscotch syrup
