Why We Love This Recipe

  • Easy to make: You won’t even need an ice cream maker to get that creamy texture.
  • Fun and delicious: It’s a colorful and fun dessert that looks as good as it tastes.
  • Party perfect: The sparkly colors make it great for birthday parties, including parties with a space or unicorn theme!

Ingredients

A flat lay of ingredients on a white surface, including food coloring, strawberry frosting, condensed milk, vanilla extract, sprinkles, and heavy whipping cream with utensils and a blue dish.
  • Heavy whipping cream: Whipped light and fluffy to create that dreamy texture.
  • Sweetened condensed milk: Adds the perfect amount of sweetness.
  • Vanilla extract: Adds warm flavor and balances the sweetness.
  • Strawberry frosting: Brings in a sweet, fruity flavor and softens the texture a bit.
  • Gel food coloring: I used black, pink, teal, purple to get those galaxy swirls.
  • Galaxy sprinkles: Added for a little sparkle and fun.

How To Make Galaxy Ice Cream

Step 1. Start by whipping the heavy cream until stiff peaks form, then add sweetened condensed milk.

Step 2. Add vanilla extract and mix well.

A hand pours condensed milk from a white bowl into a larger bowl containing whipped cream; baking tools and sprinkles are visible nearby.
A mixing bowl contains whipped cream, condensed milk, vanilla extract, and possibly oatmeal, with a spatula resting inside. Food coloring and a teal baking dish are nearby.

Step 3. Divide the mixture into four separate bowls. Stir the strawberry frosting into one of them.

Step 4. Stir a few extra drops of pink food coloring to the bowl with the frosting. I like to get it started with a toothpick or skewer, then use a spoon to mix it until the color is completely blended.

Step 5. Now do the same with the remaining colors, adding black, purple and teal to the remaining bowls.

A hand uses a wooden stick to swirl pink food coloring into a bowl of white whipped mixture, with beads visible nearby on the table.
A bowl of white icing with blue food coloring swirled in, next to chopsticks and a pile of blue, purple, and black sprinkles on a white surface.

Step 6. Add spoonfuls of the ice cream mixture to a loaf pan or casserole dish. I’ve used both but the casserole dish definitely looks prettier!

Step 7. Keep adding the mixture, spoonful by spoonful, until you’ve filled the pan.

Bowls of black and pink frosting, teal and purple frosting blobs in a teal dish, and a mix of colorful sprinkles on a marble surface.

Step 8. Swirl the colors together, being careful not to overswirl (is that even a word?). The colors will blend together more as the ice cream freezes.

Step 9. Top with sprinkles for the finishing touch.

Step 10. Freeze for at least six hours but overnight for best results. Once it’s set, just serve and enjoy!

Storage Instructions

Your no churn ice cream will last just as long as regular ice cream. Your main concern over time will be freezer burn. Be sure to wrap it well, pressing the plastic wrap down so it comes in contact with the top if the ice cream.

Variations And Add-ins

This is such a fun recipe because you can swap the colors or add-in other ingredients. Here are some of my favorites.

  • Marshmallows: Fold in mini marshmallows for a chewy galaxy texture.
  • Frosting: Try cream cheese or lemon frosting for a tangier twist.
  • Fruit: Mix in chopped freeze-dried strawberries or raspberries for extra color and texture.
  • Cookies: Layer the mixture with crushed Oreos cookies for a little chocolaty crunch.
  • Colors: Have fun and swap the food coloring to make it any combination of colors you prefer. If making this for a unicorn party, I might swap the black for a lighter color.

Tips And Tricks

This recipe is so easy that you really can’t mess things up. But here are a few tips that’ll help it turn out perfect every time.

  • Because of the frosting, this ice cream is a little softer than usual. We love the extra strawberry flavor but you can leave out the frosting if you prefer.
  • The black ice cream can get a little lost among the other colors. If you want it to stand out more, just use a larger portion of the ice cream mix with the black food coloring.
  • Use a long skewer or butter knife to gently swirl. Be sure you don’t overmix or the colors will look muddy.
  • Tap the loaf pan on the counter a few times to smooth out the top before freezing.

FAQs

Can I use regular food coloring instead of gel?

You could in a pinch but gel works best for bold, vibrant color. Liquid coloring can water down the mix and fade when frozen.

What kind of container should I freeze this in?

A loaf pan or casserole dish works great, but any freezer-safe container with a lid will do.

  • Because of the frosting, this ice cream is a little softer than usual. We love it that way but you can leave out the frosting if you like (though the frosting does give the ice cream a delicious strawberry flavor).
