Pirate Cake Recipe

Ahoy, matey! If you’re planning a pirate themed birthday party, this Pirate Cake is ready to sail right into the spotlight. I’ve made a lot of fun cakes over the years, from a Princess Castle Cake to an adorable Unicorn Cake. Now I’m swapping crowns for compasses with pirate cake that’s brimming with gold!

What I love most is how easy it is to pull together with just a few store-bought props and a sheet cake. From frosting waves to sparkling treasure on the beach, the whole thing comes together in just 30 minutes. It looks super impressive, tastes amazing, and anyone can make it, even if you’re totally new to cake decorating.

Many grocery store bakeries (Publix, for one), will sell you plain, undecorated sheetcakes. It’s super helpful if you’re short on time and can’t bake one from scratch (ask me how I know).

Why We Love This Recipe

  • Kids go wild for the colorful cake, treasure chest, and of course the pirate ship.
  • You can customize it with whatever candy or pirate-themed decorations you have.
  • Beyond looking cute, the homemade frosting and fluffy cake tastes great too.
  • It’s budget-friendly but still looks like something from a bakery display case.

Ingredients

A rectangular vanilla sheet cake on a cooling rack, surrounded by bowls of graham cracker crumbs, powdered sugar, butter, blue food coloring, cake shimmer, and pirate-themed decor.

For The Cake

  • Vanilla sheet cake: A basic 9×13 cake works perfectly as your canvas.
  • Graham cracker crumbs: Finely ground to resemble sand.
  • Powdered sugar: For a thick and spreadable frosting.
  • Unsalted butter: Softened to room temp for easy creaming.
  • Salt: Balances the sweetness in the frosting.
  • Vanilla extract: Adds flavor to the buttercream.
  • Blue food coloring: Choose gel for vibrant color without thinning the frosting.
  • Blue cake shimmer: Gives the ocean a sparkling finish.

For The Props

  • Pirate ship: Centerpiece of your pirate ship cake.
  • Plastic palm trees: Adds to the beachy pirate theme.
  • Treasure chest: Gives the cake an authentic shipwrecked look.
  • Gold coin sprinkles: Fun edible “loot” to fill the chest.

How to Make A Pirate Birthday Cake

Step 1. Bake your 9×13 cake and set it aside to cool. In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the butter until smooth. Slowly add the powdered sugar and salt, mixing until fully combined.

Step 2. Add blue food coloring and mix until you reach your desired ocean water shade.

Step 3. Frost the entire cake. Smooth out the surface and edges using a cake scraper until you have an even layer of frosting.

Step 4. Use a toothpick or skewer to outline one corner of the cake as your beach. Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs in that corner and gently pat them to create sand. Use a bit of extra frosting to create waves with a small offset spatula.

Step 5. Transfer remaining frosting to a piping bag with a star tip, then pipe a border around the cake.

Step 6. Place the pirate ship in the water and smear frosting up its sides to mimic waves. Set the palm trees and treasure chest on the beach. Fill the chest with gold coin sprinkles, letting some overflow onto the sand.

Step 7. Add a pirate sign, banner other props in the sand and around the cake if desired.

Step 8. Want a little extra magic? Spray on some shimmer for a pretty ocean shine.

That’s it! Your pirate party cake is ready to serve and enjoy.

Storage Instructions

  • Fridge: If you have leftover cake, you can store it covered in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer: You can freeze the frosted cake for up to 1 month. First, remove all the nonedible props. Then wrap the cake well in layers of plastic wrap, followed by a layer of foil.

Tips And Tricks

Decorating this cake couldn’t be easier and these tips and tricks will help you nail it every time.

  • Chill your cake before decorating. A cold cake is easier to frost and less likely to crumble.
  • Level the top before you start. You want a flat surface so the beach and water sit evenly.
  • Don’t stress over smooth frosting. The waves and decorations will cover most of it.
  • Practice your piping border on parchment paper first to get a feel for the pressure.
  • If your frosting gets too soft while decorating, pop it in the fridge for a few minutes.

Variations And Add-ins

Mix things up and give it your own twist with these fun ideas.

  • Cake: Swap vanilla for chocolate cake if your birthday pirate prefers it.
  • Frosting: If you’re short on time you can use store-bought frosting with food coloring.
  • Waves: Swirl a little white frosting over the blue to create seafoam (you can use my Moana cake as an example).
  • Creatures: Add mini sea creatures or gummy sharks around the water.
  • Glitter: Swap blue shimmer spray with edible glitter or sugar pearls.
  • Shape: Turn it into a round pirate cake by using an 8″ or 9″ cake pan instead.

FAQS

Can I make this cake ahead of time?

Yes. Baking and frosting the cake the day before the party is a great way to save time. I always wait to add the props until party day though. It makes it easier to store and the props are more likely to stay in place.

How do I stop the frosting from pulling up cake crumbs?

If this happens, try starting with a thin crumb coat of frosting and chill the cake for 15-20 minutes before adding the final layer.

What can I use if I don’t have a piping bag?

You can use a zip-top bag with the corner snipped off. It works great for adding a simple border or small details.

How do I transport the cake without messing it up?

Use a rimmed tray or cake carrier and add the tallest decorations, like the ship or palm trees, once you arrive.
