Green Goddess Dip Recipe

Anytime a recipe can pull double duty, I’m all in, and that’s why I love my homemade Green Goddess Dip. It’s perfect with veggies and pita chips, but just as good drizzled over salads or roasted vegetables. The flavor stays bright and vibrant, even after a night in the fridge, so it’s always ready when I need it.

This recipe is inspired by the vintage version that has been around since the 1920s, but I’ve given it a fresh update. I keep all those classic herb flavors but add avocado and yogurt for a creamier, tangier twist. It’s quick, easy, and perfect for pulling together a homemade snack or simple appetizer when you’re short on time.

Why We Love This Recipe

  • Creamier texture: The ultra creamy texture comes from avocado, Greek yogurt, and olive oil, without needing the heavy mayonnaise used in other recipes.
  • Fresh herb flavor: Parsley, basil, and chive give this green goddess dip a clean, vibrant taste that stays light and bright.
  • So many ways to serve it: Use it on charcuterie boards, drizzle it over salads, or enjoy it as a dip for chips, veggies, and pretzels.

Ingredients

A flat lay of ingredients including chives, Greek yogurt, lemon, avocado, fresh parsley, fresh basil, cream cheese, garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper on a white background.
  • Greek yogurt: Full fat yogurt creates a creamy base and adds protein.
  • Avocado: Helps give the dip its silky texture and natural vibrant green color.
  • Cream cheese: Adds body and helps the dressing and dip stay smooth after chilling.
  • Olive oil: Adds richness and helps the herbs blend evenly.
  • Fresh parsley: The main herb that delivers classic green goddess flavor.
  • Fresh basil: Adds natural sweetness and herb flavor.
  • Fresh chives: Provide a mild onion flavor that keeps the dip balanced.
  • Garlic clove: Just enough for gentle savory depth.
  • Fresh lemon juice: Brightens everything and keeps the flavors fresh.
  • Lemon zest: Adds a pop of bright citrus flavor.
  • Salt and black pepper: Brings all the flavors together.

How To Make This Green Goddess Dip

Step 1. Add all ingredients to a food processor or a blender.

Step 2. Blend until completely smooth and vibrant green.

Step 3. Chill the dip for at least 30 minutes to let flavors develop.

Storage Instructions

For the best flavor and nutritional value, I recommend that you enjoy this dip within 24 to 48 hours. After that, the fresh herbs may begin to oxidize, which can cause the color to darken slightly and the nutrients to decrease.

Keep the dip stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator when not serving. This will help keep it fresh for as long as possible.

Variations And Add-ins

There are plenty of easy ways to switch things up, whether you want a different herb blend, a thinner dressing, or just a fun new way to serve it.

  • Herbs: Add fresh dill, tarragon, or cilantro for a different herb flavor while keeping the classic green goddess dressing vibe.
  • Sour cream: Blend in a spoonful of sour cream for extra richness and a slightly tangy finish.
  • Capers: Stir in finely chopped capers or anchovies for a savory flavor found in some traditional goddess dip recipe versions.
  • Spice: Add a little kick of heat with a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes.

Easy Ways To Use Green Goddess

  • Spread it: Use instead of mayonnaise on sandwiches or wraps for a lighter, high in protein spread.
  • With vegetables: Serve as a dressing or a dip with roasted broccoli, radish slices, or snap peas or other vegetables. It’s also great with chips and crackers.
  • As a marinade: Toss with cucumber, cherry tomatoes, or cauliflower to make a quick marinated vegetable salad.

Tips And Tricks

These simple tips will help you get the smoothest texture, brightest flavor, and beautiful green color every time.

  • Ripe avocado: Use a ripe avocado so the dip blends up smooth and creamy without any lumps.
  • Pack the herbs: Pack the parsley and basil tightly when measuring to get as much herb flavor as possible
  • Easy on the garlic: A small garlic clove is enough since raw garlic becomes stronger after chilling.
  • Scrape the bowl: For the smoothest texture, scrape down the food processor bowl and blend until completely creamy.
  • Don’t skip the chill: Chill the dip for at least thirty minutes so the fresh herbs have time to fully infuse the yogurt base.
  • Thin if needed: If the mixture feels too thick, add a small drizzle of olive oil or a splash of water before blending again.

FAQs

Can I use low‑fat yogurt instead of full‑fat?

Yes, but the dip won’t be quite as creamy. If you go low‑fat, add an extra tablespoon of olive oil to help smooth it out.

Can I make this without a food processor?

A blender will work well also. If you only have an immersion blender, chop the herbs smaller first so everything blends a little easier.

Can I freeze this dip?

I do not recommend it. The herbs and avocado lose their bright color and the texture turns grainy once thawed.

Does this dip taste herby?

Green goddess dip does have an herb flavor but if you prefer a more subtle flavor you can blend in more yogurt or cream cheese to mellow it out.
