Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders Recipe

Like so many others, my house is usually moving in five different directions by the time dinner rolls around. That is exactly why I love recipes like these ham and cheese sliders. They are easy to pull together, quick to bake, and just a little more fun than regular ham sandwiches.

I layer soft King’s Hawaiian rolls with savory ham and Swiss cheese, then brush the tops with a sweet Dijon butter. As they bake, the rolls turn golden, the cheese melts into the ham, and the topping gives them a sweet and savory finish. Serve them as party appetizers, quick dinners, or anytime you need a hearty, last-minute snack.

For an easy meal, serve these sliders with chips, a simple green salad, or my Deviled Egg Potato Salad for an easy make-ahead side.

Why We Love This Recipe

  • Ridiculously easy to make: The whole batch of Hawaiian rolls gets sliced, layered, and baked as one giant slab. Easy peasy!
  • Big flavor: Dijon mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce turn melted butter into a delicious sweet, savory and slightly tangy topping.
  • Feeds a crowd: These sliders are small but they are filling. With a simple side, one pan of these sliders will feed a whole family.

Ingredients

A wooden board with ham, Swiss cheese, Hawaiian rolls, butter, poppy seeds, minced onion, garlic powder, onion powder, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Melted butter: This gets divided between greasing the pan and mixing into the topping, so the sliders end up buttery on both the bottom and the top.
  • Hawaiian rolls: Their slightly sweet flavor goes so well with the savory ham and cheese.
  • Deli style ham, thinly sliced: Any deli ham works, but leftover ham or honey baked ham makes a great swap if you have it on hand.
  • Swiss cheese: Melts smoothly and gives these sliders that classic ham and cheese flavor.
  • Brown sugar: This adds just enough sweetness to balance the mustard and give the tops a slightly caramelized edge as they bake.
  • Dijon mustard: Adds a little tang to balance out the sweetness in the brown sugar.
  • Worcestershire sauce: This is the ingredient that makes people ask what your secret is.
  • Sesame seeds with poppy seeds: Gives the sliders that classic bakery roll look along with a little crunch.
  • Dried minced onion: This toasts right into the butter topping.
  • Onion powder: A small amount goes a long way toward rounding out the flavor of the butter topping.
  • Garlic powder: This is the last savory layer in the topping, and it is what ties everything together.

How To Make Easy Ham and Swiss Sliders

Step 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter the bottom of a rimmed 13×9 inch baking dish or sheet with about a tablespoon of the melted butter.

Step 2. Slice all of the Hawaiian rolls in half together, horizontally, keeping the connected sheet of rolls intact. Place the bottom half in the buttered baking dish. Layer half of the sliced ham over the rolls.

Step 3. Add a layer of Swiss cheese on top of the ham.

Step 4. Top the cheese with the remaining sliced ham.

Step 5. Place the top half of the rolls over the ham and cheese layers. Then, in a small bowl, combine the remaining melted butter with the brown sugar, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, sesame and poppy seeds, dried minced onion, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stir until well mixed, then spoon evenly over the top of the rolls.

Step 6. Loosely tent the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking until the rolls are golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 20 minutes total.

Storage Instructions

  • Fridge: Refrigerate leftover ham and cheese sliders in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 300°F until warmed through.
  • Freezer: Freeze ham and cheese sliders after baking and cooling. Wrap them well, place them in a freezer safe bag or container, and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge before reheating.

Variations And Add-ins

  • Cheddar cheese: Cheddar cheese gives the sliders a sharper flavor and melts beautifully with the sliced ham.
  • American cheese:  American cheese makes the filling extra melty and gives the sliders a classic hot ham sandwich vibe.
  • Ham:  Leftover ham works well in this recipe as long as it is sliced thin. It is a great way to turn baked ham into party sliders or an easy weeknight dinner.
  • Turkey: Thin sliced turkey can be used in place of ham for a lighter version that still works well with the buttery topping.
  • Pickles: A thin layer of dill pickle chips adds a little tang and crunch. Pat them dry first so the rolls don’t get soggy.
  • Spicy mustard: Swap the Dijon mustard for spicy brown mustard if you want a stronger mustard flavor.
  • Add a little heat: A pinch of cayenne or a few dashes of hot sauce can be stirred into the butter mixture for a little heat.

Tips And Tricks

  • Use a serrated knife:  It will glide through the soft bread without tearing or squashing the layers.
  • Fold the foil tent loosely: You want the steam to escape so the rolls can brown nicely.
  • Check early for doneness: Check the sliders a few minutes early if your oven tends to run hot, since the sugar in the topping can go from golden to overly dark quickly.
  • Separate while hot: Cut through every roll line as soon as the pan comes out of the oven. The cheese separates much more cleanly while it is still hot and gooey.

FAQs

Can these sliders be served at room temperature?

You can but I think they taste best warm because the Swiss cheese is melty and the rolls are soft. They can sit out for a short time during a party, but they are better when served soon after baking.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes, you can assemble the whole pan up to a day in advance, cover it tightly, and refrigerate it unbaked until you are ready to pop it in the oven.

What other rolls can I use besides Hawaiian rolls?

Any soft mini sandwich rolls will work, though the slight sweetness of Hawaiian rolls is really what makes this version stand out.
