How to Store Leftovers

You can store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. When ready, reheat them gently on the stove or in the microwave.

You can also freeze them for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use quality hot dogs: Opt for the all beef variety for the best flavor.
  • Grate your own cheese: If you have time, grate your own cheese from the block. It melts so much better.
  • Salt the pasta water: Doing this enhances the overall taste of the dish.
  • Cook pasta al dente: The slight firmness works best when mixed with the sauce.
  • Stir often: While simmering the ingredients, give them a good stir to prevents sticking and ensures even cooking.
  • Let the flavors meld: After mixing everything together, let it sit for 2 minutes before serving.

Variations and Add-ins

  • Add veggies: Toss in peas, spinach, or chopped bell peppers for a little bit of extra nutrition.
  • Make it spicy: Add a pinch red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños for a kick.
  • Cheeses: Swap Parmesan for mozzarella or cheddar for a gooier topping
  • Pasta: You can use any short pasta like macaroni or ziti. You can also make this dish with spaghetti or linguine if you prefer.
  • Swap the sauce: Use Alfredo or a creamy tomato sauce or marinara for a different twist
  • Fresh herbs: Add a bit of fresh parsley or basil for a pop of color and freshness.
  • Experiment with sausages: Smoked, Italian sausage or chorizo work for this dish too.
  • Garlic and onion: Add sautéed sliced onion and minced garlic for extra depth.

FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes, but it’s best served fresh. If reheating, add a splash of water to loosen the sauce.

How can I make it creamier?

Try stirring in a dollop of ricotta or cream cheese at the end for extra creaminess.

What’s the difference between hot dogs and frankfurters?

Hot dogs have a milder flavor and softer in texture. Frankfurters, often called “franks,” have a firmer texture, a smokier flavor, and are closer to traditional German sausages.
