Unofficial Disney Princesses:
Though they’re every bit as popular as the official princesses, some might be surprised to learn that Anna and Elsa aren’t in the official Disney princess line-up. In the first Frozen movie, Elsa is technically a queen. By the end of Frozen 2, Anna takes over for her sister.
Disney Princesses And Fun Facts
Snow White – Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs
Ever wonder who was the first Disney princess? Snow White was the one that started it all…the original Disney princess in 1937. This was the beginning of the Disney princess franchise as we know it now.
Her movie was the first full length animated movie produced by Walt Disney Studios. Based on the German Fairy Tale by The Brothers Grimm, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs was a huge box office success and for a short time, held the record as the highest grossing sound film at the time.
The movie: A young princess named Snow White escapes from her wicked stepmother and befriends seven dwarfs who live in the forest. When the jealous queen tricks Snow White into eating a poisoned apple, the dwarfs to seek the help of a prince to break the spell and save Snow White’s life.
Fun Facts About Snow White:
- Snow White was just 14 years old in the movie, making her the youngest Disney princess.
- The original Snow White was drawn by the same artists behind Betty Boop and had pouty red lips and long eyelashes. However, Walt Disney decided that he wanted Snow White to have a more innocent and wholesome look.
- Snow White is the only Disney princess who doesn’t speak to her prince.
- The Evil Queen is one of the most popular Disney villains.

Cinderella
The Walt Disney company didn’t produce their second princess film until 1950. The story of Cinderella is based on the French version of the book Cendrillon, written by Charles Perrault.
The movie: In this animated film, a beautiful, kind-hearted young woman is mistreated by her cruel stepmother and stepsisters. With the help of her animal friends and fairy godmother, she attends a royal ball and wins the heart of a prince. However, she runs away from the ball just before midnight, leaving behind a glass slipper which ultimately becomes the key to her happily ever after.
Fun Facts About Cinderella:
- Cinderella’s prince is never actually referred to as Prince Charming in the movie.
- It’s said that one of Walt Disney’s favorite pieces of animation was when Cinderella’s fairy godmother transformed her torn dress into a beautiful white ball gown.
- Cinderella loses a shoe three times in the movie, once when she is delivering breakfast, a second time when she runs from the ball and a third time going down the steps on her wedding day.
- The story of Cinderella takes place over a 24 hour period. She is shown at the start of the day cleaning, going to the ball that night, then trying on the glass slipper the next morning.
Aurora – Sleeping Beauty
The third Disney princess in the series is Sleeping Beauty, though she’s also referred to as Aurora and Briar Rose. Released in 1959, this Disney movie was based on another story by Charles Perrault, The Sleeping Beauty.
The movie: In this film, a princess named Aurora is cursed by the wicked fairy Maleficent to fall into a deep sleep on her sixteenth birthday. Once she does, only true love’s kiss can to wake her. With the help of the three good fairies and a brave prince named Phillip, Aurora wakes up and defeats Maleficent, bringing peace to the kingdom.
Fun Facts About Aurora:
- Princess Aurora has only 18 lines of dialogue in the movie, making her the quietest of all the Disney princesses.
- In the movie, the good fairies Flora and Merryweather disagree over whether Aurura’s dress should be pink or blue. This was based on the fact that the filmmakers were having trouble making this same decision.
- Maleficent has also become one of the most famous Disney villains, with two live-action movies based on her story alone.
- Aurora’s thin, willowy body shape was based on Audrey Hepburn.
- The fairytale book at the beginning of the movie was an actual handmade book that was restored in 2008 and is occasionally displayed at public events.
Ariel – The Little Mermaid
I’m not sure what happened but there was a huge gap between the third and the fourth princess movies. Disney made The Little Mermaid in 1989, marking the beginning of what’s known as the Disney Renaissance. Based on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid, which was much darker than the Disney version, this Disney feature film was an instant classic.
The movie: Ariel is a curious and adventurous mermaid who dreams of living on land. She falls in love with a human prince, then makes a deal with a sea witch to become human herself. Her journey to find love and acceptance ultimately leads her to discover the true meaning of sacrifice and the importance of family.
Fun Facts About Ariel:
- Disney animators used Alyssa Milano’s face as inspiration for drawing Ariel.
- When King Triton arrives at the arena at the beginning of the movie, look closely in the crowd of sea people and you can see Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and Kermit The Frog (the last one is kind of random, right?)
- Shots of Princess Ariel sitting on the rock resemble the famous Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagan, Denmark.
- Ursula’s character was based on the famous drag queen Divine.
- Is Prince Eric related to Prince Phillip and Aurora? There is a painting on his dining room wall that bears a remarkable resemblance to the Sleeping Beauty Royalty.
Belle – Beauty And The Beast
The fifth Disney princess, Belle is my favorite princess of all and when the movie came out in 1991, I had to see it over and over! Beauty And The Beast, the fifth Disney princess movie, is based on the French fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Laprince de Beaumont (try saying that name fast three times!)
The movie: A kind and booksmart young woman named Belle is taken prisoner by a selfish prince who was cursed and transformed into a monstrous beast. As Belle and the Beast grow closer, they learn to look past each other’s appearances and find true love, ultimately breaking the curse and restoring the prince to his human form.
Fun Facts About Belle:
- Belle is the only person in town that wears blue, symbolizing that she’s different from the rest of the townspeople.
- The Beast’s real name is Adam.
- When Belle and Prince Adam dance at the end of the movie, it’s actually animation taken from Sleeping Beauty. Animators were running out of time and just drew over Belle and Prince Adam.
- While Paige O’Hara was auditioning for the role, a piece of hair flew in her face and she pushed it back. The animators decided to include that in the movie.
- Only five minutes of the film have no music at all…could be why this one is my favorite!
- When the Beauty And The Beast production debuted on the Disney Dream in 2017, Paige O’Hara was on board to celebrate! How do I know? I met her (the highlight of all my Disney adventures!). She was just as sweet as you’d expect too!
Jasmine – Aladdin
The movie Aladdin, based on the Arabic folk tale, was released in 1992 and we were introduced to Princess Jasmine.
The movie: A street-smart thief named Aladdin falls in love with princess Jasmine at a street market. In order to win her heart, he uses a magic lamp to transform into a prince. However, his plans are thwarted by the evil Jafar, who wants the lamp for himself. This leads Aladdin to prove that he is more than just a street rat and he ultimately saves the kingdom.
Fun Fact About Jasmine:
- Jasmine was the first princess played by two actresses, one voiced the character and another was Jasmine’s singing voice.
- According to one of the animators, Aladdin was modeled after three well known celebrities. His looks were based on Tom Cruise, his personality was modeled after Michael J. Fox (which I can totally see) and his clothes were inspired by M.C. Hammer.
- There is a big purple feather on Aladdin’s turban that falls in his face whenever he tells a lie.
- Originally Aladdin knew from the beginning that Jasmine was a princess. However, the animators changed it because they didn’t want it to look like Aladdin fell in love with her because of her wealth.
Pocahontas
In 1995, we had our next Disney princess with the release of the movie Pocahontas.
The movie: Pocahontas, a young Native American woman, falls in love with a European settler named John Smith. Unfortunately their two cultures clash as the Europeans colonize Virginia. With the help of her animal friends and wise grandmother, Pocahontas bridges the divide between her people and the newcomers, ultimately saving John and preventing a war.
Fun Fact About Pocahontas:
- This movie was released on the 400th anniversary of the year Pocahontas was born.
- Pocahontas is the first Disney princess with a tattoo.
- She was also the first American Disney princess.
Mulan
Disney’s Mulan was released in 1998 and is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. It was also Disney’s first ever DVD in 1999.
The movie: A young Chinese woman named Mulan disguises herself as a man in order to take her elderly father’s place in the army. With the help of her wit and bravery, Mulan rises through the ranks and becomes a legendary warrior, ultimately saving China and bringing honor to her family.
Fun Fact About Mulan:
- Mulan was the first Disney princess to not actually be a princess. She wasn’t born or married into royalty.
- Mulan was only the second Disney princess (the first being Aurora) to have two living parents. Since then, Rapunzel, Merida and Moana have joined those ranks.
- Mulan is only the second Disney princess to wear pants, the first being Jasmine.
- Mulan also had one actress voice the character and another sing the song.
Tiana – The Princess And The Frog
The next Disney princess, Tiana, made her debut in 2009 with The Princess And The Frog. This movie is loosely based on the Brothers Grimm tale The Frog Prince.
The movie: A hardworking waitress named Tiana dreams of opening her own restaurant in New Orleans. However, her plans are interrupted when she is transformed into a frog. She must journey through the mystical bayous of Louisiana with a handsome prince-turned-frog to break the spell and fulfill their dreams.
Fun Facts About Tiana:
- Tiana was the first African-American Disney princess.
- Tiana is also the only princess with dimples.
- At the beginning of the movie, you can spot a Merida doll on Charlotte’s shelf.
- One of the floats in the Mardi Gras parade features King Triton from The Little Mermaid.
- Louis the alligator is named after the great jazz musician Louis Armstrong.
Rapunzel – Tangled
Rapunzel made her debut in 2010 with the movie Tangled. Not only was it an instant hit but it was so popular that Disney even created a Tangled television series.
The movie: In this story, a princess named Rapunzel is kidnapped by the evil Mother Gothel and locked in a tower so that she can use Rapunzel’s magical hair to stay young forever. When a charming thief named Flynn Rider stumbles in, Rapunzel seizes the opportunity to embark on a thrilling adventure to discover the truth about herself and find her place in the world.
Fun Facts About Rapunzel:
- Rapunzel has the biggest eyes of all the Disney princesses.
- Rapunzel is barefoot through most of the movie, which is a symbol of innocence. Mandy Moore, who voices Rapunzel, loves to perform barefoot as well.
- Rapunzel is the first Disney princess movie that is computer generated, as opposed to drawn.
Merida – Brave
Merida became our next princess when Brave was released in 2012 and is the only one with an accent. Set in Scotland, this Disney film focuses veers from the typical structure of a Disney film and focuses on the mother/daughter relationship.
The movie: A skilled archer and headstrong Scottish princess, Merida defies an ancient custom and in the process, unleashes a curse upon her kingdom. To undo the curse, she uses her bravery and archery skills to confront a powerful, vengeful bear and mend the relationship with her mother.
Fun Facts About Merida:
- Merida is a princess that doesn’t sing, a first for a Disney princess.
- Merida is the first Disney princess with brothers.
- This is the first Pixar movie set entirely in the past.
- Merida is the only Pixar princess.
- Merida is also the first princess to not have a love interest.
Moana
Our most recent princesses is also one of our favorites,. With the release of her movie in 2016, Moana became part of the Disney princess family..
The movie: Moana is a fearless teenage girl who sets sail on a daring mission to save her people. With the help of a demigod named Maui, she braves the treacherous oceans and battles mythical creatures so that she can restore the heart of Te Fiti and fulfill her destiny.
Fun Facts About Moana:
- There is a Moana 2 film in the works.
- Auli’i Cravolho, the actress who played Moana, celebrated her 16th birthday on the day Moana debuted in theaters.
- While Moana is singing “How Far I’ll Go”, Pua the pig pops up from under a rug that looks like the magic carpet in Aladdin.
- Moana was the first Disney princess since Mulan to have her name in the title.
Raya – Raya And The Last Dragon
The most recent addition to the Disney princess family is Raya, whose animated film, Raya And The Last Dragon, was released in 2021.
The movie: In this movie, a young warrior named Raya embarks on a quest to find the last dragon so that she can save her divided world from an ancient evil force. Along the way, she faces many obstacles and makes unlikely friends, ultimately discovering the power of trust and unity.
Fun Facts About Raya:
- Raya is Disney’s first southeast Asian princess.
- More than 450 artists and crew members from Walt Disney Animation worked remotely to finish this film.
- The scene with the largest number of animated characters takes place underwater and features over 23,836 animated fish.
- Tuk Tuk, a fantasy creature that is half armadillo and half pug, is named for Thailand’s popular three wheeled vehicles.
Anna & Elsa – Frozen
Surprisingly, Elsa and Anna are not official Disney princesses. However, Frozen is arguably one of the most popular Disney princess movies of all time. Even I got totally caught up in the insanity at the time and stalked Disney’s website for a month trying to get Anna & Elsa costumes for my girls. How can you not love this movie when it’s got such an awesome soundtrack?! (I dare you to try not to sing along when you hear Let It Go)
Fun Facts About Anna & Elsa:
- Kristen Bell (Anna) and Idina Menzel (Elsa) both auditioned for the role of Rapunzel in Tangled.
- During the song “The First Time In Forever”, the gates open and if you look closely, you can catch a glimpse of Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder.
- Say the names Hans, Kristoff, Anna and Sven quickly and it almost sounds like Hans Christian Anderson who wrote The Snow Queen (the original Frozen).
- Olaf’s dance with the four seagulls is a tribute to Bert’s dance with the penguins in Mary Poppins.
Disney Princess Songs
In almost all the movies, Disney princess characters sing a song about their innermost hopes and dreams. Howard Ashman, the legendary Disney lyricist, dubbed these the “I Want” songs. The only exceptions are Merida and Raya, who don’t sing in their movies.
Here’s the list of songs. Be warned though, they may just be stuck in your head the rest of the day:
- Snow White – I’m Wishing
- Cinderella – A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes
- Aurora – I Wonder
- Ariel – Part Of Your World
- Belle – Belle
- Jasmine – A Whole New World
- Pocahontas – Just Around The Riverbend
- Mulan – Reflection
- Tiana – Almost There
- Rapunzel – When Will My Life Begin
- Moana – How Far I’ll Go
Live Action Movies
In what may be one of my favorite new trends, Disney has been hard at work turning these movies into live action films. Here’s what we’ve got so far:
- Aurora in Maleficent (2014)
- Cinderella (2015)
- Beauty And The Beast (2017)
- Aladdin (2019)
- Mulan (2020)
- The Little Mermaid (May 2023)
- Snow White (March 21, 2025)
- Moana (June 27, 2025)
- Tangled (2026 – tentative)
Honorable Mention: Tinkerbell
Tinkerbell first appeared in the 1904 play Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie and made her Disney debut in 1953’s Peter Pan. While technically she’s a fairy, she’s been such a popular character that it only seemed right to give her an honorable mention. She also got her own Disney fairies franchise, with a string of fairy movies that my girls were totally hooked on.
Fun Fact About Tinkerbell: Tinkerbell received her own star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 2010. There was a rumor that a live action film (Tink) was on the way, starring none other than Reese Witherspoon. However, we haven’t heard anything about it for awhile so it may possibly have been shelved.
How old are the Disney princesses?
Here are the Disney princesses, in order by age:
- Elsa – 21
- Cinderella -19
- Tiana – 19
- Anna – 18
- Pocahantas – 18
- Rapunzel – 18
- Belle – 17
- Mulan – 16
- Ariel – 16
- Aurora – 16
- Moana – 16
- Merida – 16
- Jasmine – 15
- Snow White – 14
Clearly 16 seems to be the most common age for a Disney princess.
What makes a Disney princess a princess?
This isn’t officially from Disney, and doesn’t apply to every princess universally, but here’s what I’ve observed…
The majority of these characters made the princess lineup by royalty by way of birth or marriage. This includes being the daughter of a chief. The one exception is Mulan.
If you’re a Disney princess, you’re very likely to have an animal sidekick and may even have the ability to communicate with animals. They’re also known to have beautiful singing voices (with the exception of Merida and Raya) and are kind and gentle.
The princesses have changed over the years though. While earlier princesses often relied on princes to save the day, modern day princesses are more likely to take matters into their own hands.
Who are the Disney princes
While these leading men aren’t all technically princes, they’re the one that our princesses all lived happily ever after with.
- Snow White: Prince Florian / Prince Ferdinand

- Aurora: Prince Phillip
- Ariel: Prince Eric
- Belle: Beast / Adam
- Jasmine: Aladdin
- Pocahontas: John Smith (though not technically a prince)
- Tiana: Naveen

I’m just curious why Mulan is included as a princess. Does every female lead in Disney movies count as a princess?
Loved this article! Fun stuff.
Not all of them. I’ve only included the ones that Disney says are their “official” Disney princesses 🙂
Love it, Who is Elsa’s prince
Actually, Elsa is one of the few princesses that has no prince.
What ever happen with the old rapunzel??? I can’t find anything abor this film. It was kind of dark but great. Anyone know something??
I’m not sure I know the movie you’re referring to. What year did it come out?
Will there ever be a Romanian princess?? Just sayinn
Good question!
I think its also worth noting that the 2 princesses with separate singing voices than than their speaking were both done by 1 singer, Lea Salonga.
Thank you for pointing that out! 🙂
Hello, what about Elena of Avalor, the hispanic disney princess?
We love her and while she’s a princess, she’s not on the “official list”.
❤
