Harry Potter Butterbeer is the perfect treat for movie night or your next Harry Potter party. It tastes just like the butterbeer at Universal and not only does it taste amazing, but with just four ingredients, it’s super easy to make too (use store bought whipped cream and you’ll only need three ingredients!)
If you’ve been to a Universal Park, you know all about the joy that is The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter. You have to visit both parks too! Diagon Alley in Universal Studios and Hogsmeade in Islands Of Adventure are two totally different experiences for Harry Potter fans! Of course, when you do go, you HAVE to try one very special treat.
That would of course be the most famous drink in the Harry Potter books and movies, Butterbeer! There’s seriously nothing like having a cup of this tasty drink while looking out onto Hogwart’s Castle. Just writing about it makes me want to go back right this minute!
In fact, if you’re visiting the parks soon, this post will tell you everything you need to know about Butterbeer At Universal Studios Orlando, from the six different types available to where you can find each one!
What is Butterbeer?
If you haven’t read the Harry Potter book series or seen the movies, you may not know much about this popular drink.
It’s the favorite beverage among the wizarding students at Hogwarts and they drink it regularly when visiting Hogsmeade. If you’re wondering what Butterbeer tastes like, it’s described in the book as a little bit like less sickly butterscotch. I know that doesn’t make it sound too appetizing but trust me, it’s a pretty yummy drink!
What is Butterbeer made of?
In the books, Butterbeer is made of just three ingredients: butterscotch, sugar and water. However, we muggles make it a little differently.
There’s actually more than one way to make a homemade Butterbeer recipe. Most have cream soda as the base and use some variation of the following ingredients: butterscotch syrup, caramel syrup, heavy cream, pure vanilla extract, rum extract, melted butter, butter extract and more.
Since I’m all about the easy recipes, our DIY Butterbeer has just four ingredients: cream soda, butterscotch syrup, heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar.
While we like to make our whipped cream, you only need three ingredients if you use store bought. That’s all you really need because this recipe is seriously good and tastes just like the real thing! Why make it harder than it has to be, right?
What’s in a Starbucks Butterbeer Frappuccino?
I only recently discovered that Starbuck has a special Harry Potter frappuccino on their secret menu…pretty cool, right? Just order a Creme Frappuccino and ask for three pumps of caramel, three pumps of toffee nut syrup and a drizzle of caramel over the top.
Does Butterbeer have alcohol?
Though the version in the book has a small alcohol content (it’s known to get the house elves a little tipsy), most of the real-life recipes don’t contain alcohol. That being said, you can always put an adult spin on it with butterscotch schnapps and/or vanilla vodka.
Where can you buy it?
If you want to buy Butterbeer, you won’t find a whole lot of options. You can buy Flying Cauldron Butterbeer on Amazon but otherwise you’ll have to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios or take the Harry Potter Studios Tour in London. Those last two require a bit of planning though…that’s why I’ve made this easy copycat recipe!
That’s why you need this recipe! Now you can make Butterbeer in the comfort of your own home (and you’ll LOVE how easy it is!).
How to make Butterbeer
The best thing about this recipe isn’t just how good it tastes, it’s how easy it is! You just need four ingredients and you’re good to go: cream soda, butterscotch syrup, heavy cream and powdered sugar.
Note: If you want to make this recipe even simpler, you can skip steps 1 and 2 and use store bought whipped cream instead of homemade.
Step 1: You’ll want to start by preparing the whipped cream. Use a stand mixer or hand mixer to whip 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Once soft peaks begin to form, add the powdered sugar.
Step 2: Continue to whip the cream until stiff peaks form, then set aside.
Step 3: Now pour approximately two ounces of cream soda and a tablespoon of caramel syrup into each mug. (This recipe makes two servings).
Step 4: Mix together. You’ll want to be sure the syrup and cream soda are well blended.
Step 5: Pour in the remaining cream soda.
Step 6: Stir gently, just until ingredients are mixed. Be sure you don’t stir too much or you’ll lose some of the carbonation).
Step 7: Top with whipped cream. I like to use an icing bag to make it pretty but that’s totally up to you!
Step 8: Drizzle butterscotch over the whipped cream
This Harry Potter Butterbeer couldn’t be much easier but that’s not even the best part. The best part is how good it tastes!
This is also a perfect drink for Harry Potter birthday parties too. Just increase the recipe to fit the number of people you’ll be serving. I think it’ll go pretty well with some chocolate frogs, don’t you?
You can serve this drink in mugs, tall glasses or even these fun Hogwarts inspired tumblers. If you’re having a party, these colorful cups make great Harry Potter party favor ideas! Either way, it’s going to be a big hit!

This looks so good! I haven’t had it in ages!
It is so good and super easy to make too! So much fun for a Harry Potter night!
En mi paÃs no hay soda de crema, ¿podrÃa utilizar batido de vainilla en su lugar?
in the books it is often served hot, have you tried it that way, is it good?
I haven’t but I do plan to try it soon. I know they serve a hot butterbeer at Universal Studios so maybe I’ll order it hot next time! 🙂
Tried it hot at The Leaky Caldron in Universal, it WAS delicious!
I totally agree! We just got back from Universal yesterday and since it was chilly out (by Florida standards), I ordered it hot for the first time and it was SO good!!!
i need more informasion
Hi Sally,
What would you like more information about?
Do you make your own butterscotch syrup? And if so what is the recipe? Or do you use store bought butterscotch syrup?
Hi Liani,
I’m all about the easy recipes so I use store bought butterscotch syrup, usually Smuckers 🙂
Hope you enjoy it!
I can never find this syrup. ðŸ˜
I find it at Publix and Walmart with the ice cream toppings. I’m not sure if you have either of those nearby but I hope you’re able to find it! 🙂
Sounds good, and close enough. But the butter beer at Universal doesn’t have whipped cream on it. I have seen recipe where it’s made with a marshmallow fluff watered down. I think that’s more authentic.
Hi Rachel,
We were just at Universal yesterday and ordered some in Diagon Alley. You’re right, it’s not exactly like whipped cream because it’s a bit more frothy, but I think it’s pretty close. I like the marshmallow fluff idea though…I’ll have to try that next time!
I’m going to tell my friends about this they will die to make butterbeer!
Awesome!!!!!
