Variations and Add-ins

  • Kiwi: If you can’t find ripe kiwi, you can use green grapes instead.
  • Raspberries: Instead of raspberries, try fresh cherries or large strawberry slices.
  • Blackberries: Mary’s hair could be made with black olives instead, if you prefer.
  • Brownies: Instead of brownie bites, feel free to use miniature Reese’s cups, Oreos, or pieces of your favorite chocolate candy.
  • Pretzels: Swap these for mini Twix or any of your favorite mini chocolate snack bars.
  • White cheddar: Sarah Sanderson’s hair is made with white cheddar, but you can use pineapple chunks, butter popcorn or your favorite yellow gummy candies.
  • Pepperoni: If you can’t find mini pepperonis, you can cut regular sized pepperonis into smaller circles or just use the larger ones on the board instead.

Top Tips For A Halloween Charcuterie Board

  • For the board: We used this 17.6″ gold tray from Target but you can use any large round cutting board or serving tray.
  • Test run: To make sure your board is big enough, lay the wrapped brie out on the board, then imagine the other ingredients filled in around it.
  • Use a parchment liner: Lining the board helps with easy cleanup and prevents any direct contact between the food and the board.
  • Add fun details: If you have empty spaces, fill them in with other Halloween themed treats, like mini pumpkin candy corn or gummy worms. You could also add some Halloween puppy chow.
  • For serving: To make serving easier during your Halloween party, add small tongs, forks, and party picks around the board. You’ll also want to have some small plates on hand so guests can serve themselves.

FAQs

Can I make this recipe in advance?

While you can make it ahead of time, I like to wait until just before the party starts. This ensures all the ingredients are fresh and the flavors haven’t started blending together.

Can I use this idea for other occasions besides Halloween?

Sure. For other occasions, you can just leave the faces off, and arrange the fruits and meats in a different design.

How much charcuterie should I prepare per person?

I try to aim for about 4-6 ounces of food per person. This includes a mix of cheese, meats, fruits, and snacks. You can adjust quantities based on the number of guests and whether the board will be served with other appetizers.
