Homemade Guacamole Recipe
I’ve always loved guacamole, but once I started making it at home, those store‑bought tubs just didn’t cut it anymore. Using fresh ingredients and mixing everything together right before serving really makes all the difference. The flavor is brighter, the texture is creamier, and you can just taste the freshness in every bite.
My easy guacamole recipe comes together quickly with ripe avocados, lime, onion, cilantro, jalapeno, and garlic. I mash everything in one bowl, keep it a little chunky, and serve it with tortilla chips or spoon it over tacos and burritos. I’m not kidding when I say that every time I take it to a gathering, it’s the first thing to disappear.
Planning a Mexican inspired party? Try serving this guacamole with my Pineapple Margaritas and restaurant style Salsa Ranchera for the perfect spread.

How To Make The Best Guacamole
Step 1. Slice the avocados in half, remove the pit, and scoop flesh into a mixing bowl with a large spoon or this 3-in-1 avocado slicer (it’s one of my most used kitchen tools!). Mash the avocado with a large fork. I leave mine a little chunky.
Step 2. Add the diced onion, diced tomatoes, chopped cilantro, and minced jalapeño pepper, minced garlic and salt to the bowl. Gently mix ingredients together with spoon.

Step 3. Serve immediately in smaller bowls or family style. It’s perfect for scooping with tortilla chips, but I also love to spoon it over grilled chicken or fish. It makes a great topping for burritos, enchiladas and these Shrimp Tacos too.

Storage Instructions
Store leftover guacamole in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent browning. It should stay fresh for up to 2 days.

Tips And Tricks
A few simple tips can really make a difference when you’re making guacamole at home. These will help you pick the best ingredients and get that perfect flavor and texture every time.
- Choose the best avocados: Pick avocados that give slightly when pressed but are not mushy. The skin should look dark and feel firm but gently soft.
- Speed up ripening if needed: If your avocados are still firm, place them in a paper bag on the counter for a day or two to help them ripen faster.
- Remove tomato seeds for better texture: Scooping out the seeds keeps the guacamole from becoming watery and helps the mixture stay thick and creamy.
- Tame the heat: Jalapenos can vary in spice, so remove the seeds and membranes for a milder guacamole or leave some in for extra heat.
- Serve it fresh for the best flavor: Guacamole tastes best right after it is made while the avocado is bright and creamy.
Once you’ve added the jalapeno, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. The oils from the pepper can irritate your skin and eyes.

Variations And Add-ins
If you want to change things up a little, there are several easy ways to customize this guacamole. These simple add ins and swaps let you adjust the flavor while keeping the fresh avocado flavor everyone loves.
- Chili powder: Add just a pinch of for a subtle smoky flavor.
- Tomatoes: You can use chopped sun-dried tomatoes instead of fresh if you prefer.
- Fruit mix-ins: Mix in diced mango or pineapple for a sweet contrast that works well with fish tacos.
- Guacamole, no tomatoes: If you prefer a smoother guacamole, just leave the tomatoes out. Several traditional guacamole recipes are made this way.
- Cumin: Add a pinch of cumin for a warmer Mexican flavor.
- Green onion: Swap the red onion for sliced green onion if you want a milder onion flavor.

FAQs
You can, but you’ll want to cover the guacamole tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Stir before serving.
Haas avocados are ideal because they are creamy and rich when ripe.
Sure! Some people prefer guacamole without cilantro. Simply leave it our you can add a little chopped parsley for the same pop of green color.
Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface or add a thin layer of water on top before sealing the container. This limits air exposure.
