Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

Cupcakes in the shape of ice cream cones? If you thought our Beach Cupcakes or Mermaid Cupcakes were fun, you’re really going to love these! Perfect for birthday parties, summer picnics, or just a sweet treat to enjoy any time of year, these adorable desserts always steal the show!

I really love how easy these are too! Each cone is filled with batter, baked into light and fluffy cupcakes, then topped with classic, sweet and creamy frosting. And the best part is that instead of a cupcake liner, you get a crispy bit of cone with every bite.

Plus, you can customize them with any of your favorite cake flavors and frosting combinations. Whether you prefer chocolate cake with vanilla frosting, or maybe a lemon cake with cream cheese frosting (my favorite!), the possibilities are endless.

How to Make Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

Step 1. Start by adding your cake mix, eggs, oil, and water to a large bowl (use the amounts listed on the box).

Step 2. Mix on high until the cake batter is well combined.

Step 3. Pour the batter into each cone, filling them about ¾ of the way full. We like to use a piping bag to make this process easier and less messy.

Step 4. Place the filled cones in a cupcake pan to keep them upright in the oven.

Step 5. Bake at 350 degrees for 12–15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely!

Step 6. Spoon the frosting into a piping bag fitted with a 1M tip, then pipe it onto each cupcake cone. I like to use a swirl pattern to resemble real soft serve ice cream.

Tip: If you can’t find pink frosting, you can just color white frosting with pink food coloring.

Storage Instructions

These cupcakes are best served right after you decorate them. But if you have leftovers, you can store them in the fridge for up to a couple of days. Just use the same cupcake or muffin tin you baked them in to help them stand upright.

Variation and Add-ins

  • Different flavors: I love changing up the flavors of the cupcake batter. Chocolate cupcakes, strawberry cupcakes, and lemon cupcakes are fun choices. You can also try more unique flavors, like red velvet or carrot cake.
  • Mix-ins: Toss chocolate chips, nuts or sprinkles into the cupcake batter for added texture and flavor.
  • Toppings: Sprinkle crushed cookies, candies, or chopped nuts on top of the frosting for extra decoration.
  • Fillings: You could even fill the center of the cupcakes with a little caramel sauce, chocolate ganache or fruit preserves, similar to what I did with these Beauty And The Beast Cupcakes.

Ice Cream Cone Cupcake FAQs

How do I keep the cones from getting soggy?

Once the cupcakes are baked, let them cool for about 15 minutes. Then, gently poke a hole in the bottom of the cone with a toothpick or wooden skewers. The moisture can build up from the heat and this allows some of it to escape.

Can I make these in advance?

You can make these cupcakes the day before you plan on serving them, but the cone may soften slightly.

Can I use sugar cones instead?

Sure! If you prefer sugar cones, you can use a cupcake cone baking rack like this one to bake them.

    1. Can you prepare the day before?

      1. You can but the cones may not stay as crisp. If you don’t mind them being a little softer, then you’ll be fine making them ahead of time. 🙂
