3 Ingredient Banana Milkshake

Banana milkshakes are one of my favorite ways to use up bananas that are getting a little too ripe! What I love most about this recipe is that frozen bananas do all the work. Three ingredients, one blender, and you’ve got a milkshake that tastes like it came straight from an old-school diner.

They give the shake that thick, cold, creamy texture without watering it down, and the banana flavor comes through strong in every single sip. A hint of vanilla from the ice cream ties it all together and makes it absolutely irresistible. Sometimes I’ll even toss in some strawberries for a creamy strawberry banana shake!

Top it off with banana slices, a swirl of whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate syrup,,,or all three. I won’t judge, I do it too!

Why We Love This Recipe

  • Only 3 Ingredients – Vanilla bean ice cream, frozen bananas, and milk. That’s it…no fancy add-ins required.
  • Customizable – Top it with banana slices, whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate or caramel, a sprinkle of cinnamon or anything else you like. The possibilities are endless!
  • Ready In Minutes – Blend it up in 20–30 seconds and it’s done. It really is that easy!

Ingredients

A bunch of bananas, a bowl of vanilla bean ice cream, and a small pitcher of whole milk arranged on a white surface.
  • Bananas – Frozen works best but you can use fresh bananas if you want to make your milkshake right away. The size of your bananas will affect how much milkshake you end up with – three medium bananas makes about 4 cups.
  • Vanilla Bean Ice Cream – Slightly thawed ice cream works best here but any vanilla ice cream will do the job just fine.
  • Whole Milk – Whole milk gives you the richest result, but almond milk works great too if that’s what you have on hand.

How To Make A Banana Milkshake

Step 1. Prep your bananas first! Peel, slice, and freeze them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, then freeze for several hours or overnight.

Step 2. Add the milk, frozen banana slices, and ice cream to your blender.

Step 3. Blend on the highest speed for at least 20–30 seconds, until the milkshake is a smooth, creamy consistency.

Step 4. Pour into glasses and enjoy as is, or pile them high with your favorite toppings.

Topping Suggestions

Half the fun of a banana milkshake is loading it up with fun toppings! Here are some of my favorites:

  • Banana slices
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Caramel drizzle
  • Peanut butter drizzle
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Toasted coconut flakes
  • Chopped peanuts
  • Maraschino cherry
  • Cinnamon

Add-ins & Variations

  • French Vanilla Ice Cream – Vanilla bean is my go-to, but French vanilla works just as well.
  • Chocolate Ice Cream – Swap the vanilla ice cream for chocolate to give your shake a more decadant twist.
  • Peanut Butter – Add some peanut butter to the blender for a delicious peanut butter & banana combo.
  • Caramel Sauce – Because why not? A caramel banana shake is impossible to resist.
  • Espresso Or Instant Coffee – For a banana coffee shake that coffee lovers won’t be able to get enough of.

Tips & Tricks

  • Freeze bananas overnight – This gives you the best results every time. Don’t try to rush it with just a couple of hours if you can help it.
  • For a thicker shake – Stop as soon as the bananas are fully blended. If you need to thicken your shake, add a little more ice cream.
  • For a thinner shake – Keep blending for up to a minute, then add more milk a little at a time.
  • Enjoy immediately – This milkshake is best when you drink it right after blending. Storing it isn’t recommended because you’ll lose the thick, creamy texture that makes it so good.
