How to Make a Unicorn Dessert Charcuterie Board

Before making the dip. you’ll start by heating the Funfetti birthday cake mix (read below to learn why this is a step you don’t want to skip). Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread the dry cake mix thinly over the paper.

Step 2. Place the pan in the oven for 6 minutes.

Step 3. Once the cake mix has been treated, allow it to cool and place the mix in a bowl to use later.

Step 6. Add the baked and cooled Funfetti cake mix to the bowl. Mix until well combined, making sure to scrape the bottom of the bowl. Mix for about 3 minutes on medium.

Step 7. Add 1 tablespoon of heavy whipping cream and mix well. About 2 minutes. If the dip is too thick add another tablespoon of heavy whipping cream.

Step 8. Separate the dip evenly into 3 smaller bowls.

Step 9. Add about 1-2 drops of each of the food colors into one of the separate bowls. Use a small spatula to mix well.

Step 10. Add the three different colors of dip to your serving bowl.

Step 11. Using a toothpick to swirl the colors together.

Note: Do not mix it too much because you don’t want the three colors combining into one color. The dip should have a pretty swirl pattern.

Step 12. Add the colorful sprinkles and edible glitter on top.

Optional: You can also swirl it again so that the glitter and sprinkles are mixed throughout the dip and then add more to the top.

Step 16. Next, add the popcorn adjacent to your animal crackers and spread it out as well.

Step 17. Randomly fill in the board with graham crackers. You’ll want to stack more than one on top of each other in places.

Step 18. Use the large marshmallows to fill in any big gaps on the board.

Step 19. Place the strawberries in the small openings on the board, leaving some open spaces near the edge of the board so that it can be transported.

Optional: Make the board extra fun by adding even more sprinkles or edible glitter over the entire board!

Other Options for Your Unicorn Charcuterie Board

Make these beautiful boards with any of your favorite colorful candy, cookies or crackers. Here are some ideas you can consider:

  • Fruit flavored candy canes
  • Rainbow colored gummy belts (bands)
  • Frosted animal crackers
  • White or pink chocolate covered pretzels
  • Mini powdered donuts
  • Colorful macarons
  • Pink colored fruit roll-ups
  • White chocolate covered strawberries

Tips for Making an Enchanting Unicorn Board

  • Use different textures, sizes and shapes to keep your cookie and candy board interesting. For this board, the dip is creamy, the lucky charm marshmallows are soft and chewy, the berries are juicy, and the crackers add a little bit of a crunch.
  • Part of what makes these grazing boards so much fun is that they follow a theme. For example, for a unicorn snack board, you’ll want to choose pretty white and pastel-colored foods.
  • If you purchased too many sweet treats for your board, place some small party bags close by and allow everyone to pack some up to take home as party favors.

What if I Don’t Have a Large Cutting Board?

You don’t have to use a special charcuterie board or even a large cutting board. All you need is a surface large enough to hold the snacks you’re adding.

You can use a small marble slab, a large serving tray or even an upside-down baking sheet covered in parchment paper. If using parchment paper, you may want to tape the underside to the baking sheet, just so it doesn’t slide around.

Why Do I Bake the Dry Cake Mix?

You may have heard that eating raw cake batter is not always safe to eat. Most people think that’s because of the eggs, but it’s actually because of the raw flour in the batter.

By cooking the dry cake mix, you kill any harmful bacteria, making it perfectly safe to eat raw in dessert recipes.

How Do I Pronounce Charcuterie?

You may have heard it pronounced several interesting ways, but the right way to say it is, “shar-KOO-tuh-ree.” Regardless of how you say it, they are so much fun and are always one of our favorite things to make for parties!
