How to Make Mexican Flag Jello Shots
For The Green Layer
Step 1: Bring 1 cup of water to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Remove the hot water from the burner and whisk in the green Jello mix, stirring until completely dissolved.
Step 2: Add ½ cup tequila and ½ cup cold water. Stir to combine.
Step 3: Divide the green Jello mixture evenly between the plastic shot glasses, filling each about one-third of the way full. Place the cups in the refrigerator to chill for about 2 hours.
For The White Layer
Step 4: For the next layer of Jello, whisk together 1 cup water and 1 envelope of Knox gelatin in a medium saucepan. Heat the mixture until it’s just beginning to boil.
Step 5: Remove from the heat and add the sweetened condensed milk.
Step 6: Add ½ cup tequila and stir to combine. Allow the mixture to cool completely.
Step 7: Once it’s had time to cool, pour mixture into the Jello shot cups on top of the green layer. Each cup should now be about ⅔ full, leaving equal room for the last layer. (Note: If you have extra sweetened condensed milk, you can discard it.)
Step 8: Move the cups back to the refrigerator to chill for another 2 hours.
For The Red Layer
Step 9: For the last layer, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Remove from heat and add the strawberry Jello, whisking until dissolved.
Step 10: Add ½ cup cold water and ½ cup tequila, then stir to combine. Allow the strawberry Jello mixture to cool completely to room temperature.
Step 11: Once the Jello has cooled, fill your shot cups the remainder of the way with the strawberry Jello layer. Move the cups back to the refrigerator to chill for 2 more hours or until ready to serve.
Step 12: Before serving, top with whipped cream.
Tips & Tricks
- For the red and green layers, you can substitute any flavors of green or red Jello that you like. You can also swap the green Jello for a blue layer, and you’ll have the perfect layered shot for the fourth of July or Memorial Day.
- Spray a bit of coconut oil in each shot cup before pouring in the bottom layer of Jello. This is an easy way to ensure that the shots come out easily.
- Be sure not to add too much alcohol or your shots may not set properly.
- If you don’t have tequila, you can also make these shots with rum, vodka, or any type of alcohol that you prefer.
How Do I Store Mexican Flag Jello Shots?
Store your shots covered or in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They should keep for 4-5 days after you make them, but will taste best if consumed within a day or two.
How Long Can They Stay at Room Temperature?
If you’re serving these at a party, they can stay out of the refrigerator for about 2-3 hours at the most. I recommend serving them in batches and refilling as needed.
What’s the Best Tequila to Use?
The best kind is any kind that you like! But if you’re not sure what to get, I’d go with a mid-priced brand like Sauza or Jose Cuervo.
